Turkey – Two more killed in PKK-related bombings

Monday, September 4, 2006

Bomb blasts in South-eastern Turkey have claimed the lives of two people, one of them a police officer and injured up to 14 other people. The bombing comes during the escalating battle between the Turkish government and the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), the separatist group fighting for an independent state between the Iraq-Turkish border.

The two bombs appear to have been detonated by remote control as police investigated claims of a suspicious package left near a garden area in the town of Catak (in the Van province). Authorities in the area said that the bomb had been located in a rubbish bin. The Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK), who are linked to the PKK, have claimed responsibility for the attack. On Tuesday, 29 August, the groups website carried the message, “We will trun Turkey into hell.” They also warned foreign tourists to stay away from the country.

The frequency and sophistication of these attacks appear to be on the rise, following other bombings last week. The previous attacks at Turkish holiday resorts, which killed 3 people and injured over 100 (10 of them Britons), were also claimed by TAK. Many of the recent bombings have been aimed at tourists. In recent years Turkey has improved its foreign reputation as a safe country by promoting tourism, now the disruption to that industry places thousands of jobs (and millions of dollars in revenue) at risk.

In a separate incident, 7 Turkish soldiers were killed in a clash with PKK militants in the south east. The militants are reported to have launched an attack against the soliders in their army post on the Iraq-Turkey border. The Turkish government has warned that unless Kurdish separatist violence stops it will take action against PKK targets in Iraq, sending its own troops across the border. The threat was reiterated by the newly-inaugurated chief of Turkish defense forces General Yasar Buyukanit, who vowed to defeat Kurdish terrorism.

China launches space probe to the moon

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

The People’s Republic of China today launched its first moon orbiter as part of the country’s lunar exploration program.

At 18:05 hours local time (10:05 UTC) the rocket Chang’e 1 lifted off from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwestern China. The name of the probe refers to the Chinese goddess of the moon.

The state television network broadcast live footage of the countdown and launch, which took place in the presence of Chinese officials and some 2,000 Chinese who paid around US$100 to attend the event, but without any international press.

The 2350 kg probe is expected to enter a lunar orbit on November 5. On its year-long mission, Chang’e 1 will obtain three dimensional images of the Moon’s surface and gather information related to the chemical and physical properties of the lunar soil. It will do so circulating at about 200 kilometers above the lunar surface. On its way to the Moon the spacecraft will register data regarding the solar winds, or space weather. It will also broadcast 30 patriotic Chinese songs when orbiting the Moon.

The officially-Communist nation which hosts next year’s Olympics hopes to put a taikonaut on the moon in ten to 15 years. Last month, Japan launched a lunar probe while India hopes to achieve the same next April. In 2003, China used one of their own rockets to get the astronaut Yang Liwei into space. Yang told the Xinhua News Agency last week that once China has a manned space station, he and his fellow taikonauts could form a new branch of the Communist Party in space.

Last January, China used a rocket to blow up one of its own satellites, sparking fears from the United States and other countries that China might have a military agenda in space, besides the problems of space pollution and danger to other satellites the explosion caused. China says the goals of its space program are scientific and peaceful.

Thirteen Israeli soldiers, scores of Palestinians killed in deadly day of fighting in Gaza Strip

Tuesday, July 22, 2014

On Sunday, in the deadliest day of fighting for the Israeli military in several years, thirteen Israeli soldiers were reported killed in the Gaza Strip. Over 500 deaths of Palestinians have been reported in the Gaza Strip in the now-fourteen days of Israel’s offensive against Hamas.

Over 67 deaths of Palestinians on Sunday, by one report well over 100 — both civilians and fighters combined — occurred in one area, the Gaza City suburb of Shujai’iya, following heavy fighting and shelling by Israeli forces.

Meanwhile, thirteen Israeli soldiers were killed Sunday, including two soldiers who were United States citizens. Furthermore, the armed wing of Hamas claimed in a statement, “We have captured a Zionist soldier and the occupation has not admitted that”, and displaying a identification card and a serial number. The IDF is investigating the claim. A anonymous senior Israeli military source told The Guardian in regards to Hamas fighters, “We have to admit we were facing good fighters, very well equipped with sophisticated weapons systems, accurate weapons, heavy weapons including mortars, booby traps.”

All this occurred while a United Nations Security Council meeting was held in New York City at the request of Jordan. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Rwanda’s UN ambassador Eugene Gasana said, “The members of the Security Council expressed serious concern about the growing number of casualties. The members of the Security Council called for an immediate cessation of hostilities”. Gasana continued saying, “The members of the Security Council called for respect of international humanitarian law including protection of civilians[…] The members of the Security Council emphasized the need to improve the humanitarian situation, including through humanitarian pauses.”

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who is in Doha, Qatar meeting with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said in a statement, “As I travel the region, I will continue to press for an [immediate] ceasefire — an immediate end to the Israeli military operation in Gaza and the rocket fire by Hamas and Islamic Jihad”. Ban criticized Israel for the civilian death toll saying, “While I was en route to Doha, dozens more civilians, including children, have been killed in Israeli military strikes in the Shejaiyah neighborhood in Gaza[…] I condemn this atrocious action. Israel must exercise maximum restraint and do far more to protect civilians.”

In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in press conference, “We will continue this operation for as long as it takes.” Netanyahu also appeared on CNN saying Hamas uses civilians as human shields; “They use telegenically dead Palestinians for their cause. They want the more dead, the better”. He further added, “We try to target military targets and unfortunately there are civilian casualties which we regret and we don’t seek”.

Sandy Allen, world’s tallest woman dies at age 53

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

American Sandy Allen, recognized as the tallest woman in the world, has died at age 53 at her nursing home in Shelbyville, Indiana. She was 7 ft 7¼ in (232 cm) in height.

Even though she was officially named as the worlds tallest woman by the Guinness Book of World Records several websites list Yao Defen as the tallest. Yao’s official height is disputed, however.

Allen’s height was brought on by a tumor in her pituitary gland that caused it to release growth hormone uncontrollably. She had surgery at age 22.

In 1978 she appeared in the film Fellini’s Casanova. She also appeared in a TV movie called Side Show and in a Canadian/American documentary film called Being Different. New Zealand band Split Enz wrote the song “Hello Sandy Allen” about her.

Because of physical limitation, she spent her last years in a retirement center. The center, coincidentially, is where Edna Parker lives. Parker has been recognized as the oldest living person in the world at age 115.

Fernando Alonso wins 2006 Monaco Grand Prix

Sunday, May 28, 2006

Fernando Alonso won the FIA Formula-1 Monaco Grand Prix for the first time in his career today.

During Saturday’s qualifying session, Michael Schumacher made a strange mistake in the La Rascasse corner, when he driver locked his car’s wheels, bringing the vehicle to a halt and finished the race causing the drivers behind him to lose time on their fast laps. After a long investigation the FIA’s stewards decided to cancel all his fast laps as a penalty for the unsporting behaviour displayed by him. Article 112 of the regulations, applied by FIA, prevents the F1 team Ferrari to appeal this decision. Thus, Schumacher and Felipe Massa, who crashed his car earlier in the qualification, were last on the starting grid. The Ferrari team decided to change the engine in both cars, because there was no more stringent penalty that could have been imposed on them. Michael started the race from the pit-lane.

Alonso was in the lead for the most of the race. Kimi Raikkonen and Mark Webber, who were the only serious competitors to Alonso for the first part of the race, lost their cars (due to engine failure) almost simultaneously, one by one. After that Alonso drove to victory with little opposition from the other drivers.

With a huge gap from the Spaniard, McLaren driver Juan-Pablo Montoya took second place.

The circuit was a great success for Red Bull team as David Coulthard came in at third place.

There was no traditional champaign douse after the race in memory of Édouard Michelin, one of the owner of Michelin company died a couple of days before the race.

5 Signs Your Ex Boyfriend Still Wants You}

Submitted by: Anthony Malibu

Trying to win back your boyfriend? You’ll need to know when all your hard work is paying off. If you’re not sure if your ex still wants you or not, finding out his true feelings can help speed up the reconciliation process. Here’s how you can tell if your ex wants you back, whether or not he’s showing his heart on his sleeve.

Losing someone you love to a break up can be depressing and sad, but if you’re working toward getting your boyfriend back at least you’re taking steps in a positive direction. Many breakups can be reversed, and couples make up every single day. Time, patience, and a willingness to do the right things are all that’s standing between you and your ex boyfriend. But if you want to know how he really feels? Below you’ll find 5 signs your ex boyfriend still wants you in his life.

My Ex Boyfriend Keeps In Touch With Me

Whenever your ex keeps the lines of communication open, it means he’s not totally finished with your relationship. He might stick around as a “friend”, or call you up with a thousand platonic excuses to find out how you’re doing, but what your boyfriend is really up to is keeping tabs on you. Your ex wants to know where you are, just in case he reverses his decision to end things. It’s comforting for him to know that he can get you back anytime he wants, especially if you’re not dating anyone else.

Keeping in touch and constantly contacting is one way your ex can know all about your everyday life, but still hide behind the guise of friendship as he pursues other interests. Is it a sign he wants you back? Maybe not right now. But it’s a definite sign that he doesn’t want you to go away.

My Ex Boyfriend Called After A Long Period Of Not Talking To Me

An ex who dials your number (or emails you, or text-messages you…) after a long period of silence is looking to find out your current status. Something happened in his life that changed the way he looked at you. Perhaps he was chasing another girl and it didn’t work out, or maybe he was reconsidering the romance he had with you. Hell, maybe he just plain misses you big time. No matter what he says or how nonchalant he might act, your ex is really getting in touch with you for one reason: he still wants you.

Don’t let any of his lame excuses fool you, either. Ex boyfriends will call saying anything and everything, from asking for old “stuff” back to wanting you to believe they’re just saying hello. The truth of the matter is that your ex has been thinking about you, and it took some courage for him to call. Reward that courage by not questioning his motives for calling, at least not right now. If you want your boyfriend back, make sure he knows you’re happy he dialed you up.

My Ex Boyfriend Wants To Meet Me

Contact is one thing, but wanting to meet up with you is another big sign your exboyfriend still wants you. You need to be careful on this one however, as it could be that he’s only meeting you for physical reasons. Guys who call wanting to get immediately romantic or fly right back into your arms are probably looking to sleep with you, get a booty call, and satisfy their own sexual needs. An ex who’s truly thinking about you again in a girlfriend capacity will be a lot more timid and a lot less quick to jump into something, and that’s how you’ll know the difference.

Meeting your ex boyfriend is a necessary part of getting back together with him. Make sure you choose something small and quick, like a lunch or coffee date. Your reunion date should last no longer than 45 minutes for best results, and should leave him wanting to see you again. Don’t reveal everything you’ve been doing to your exboyfriend all at once either: make sure you leave enough to the imagination that he’ll want to continue to call, email, or contact you.

My Ex Keeps Asking If I’m Seeing Anyone Else

One of the signals given off when your ex wants you back: asking about your dating situation. No guy wants to put himself out on a limb by asking you out again, only to be rejected because you’re seeing someone else. If your ex is asking about your lovelife, he’s already thinking of being with you again. He could also be jealous and nervous that you’re going to move on without him. Knowing that you’re not dating anyone gives him the green light to proceed, but don’t be too eager to reveal this information entirely. Let him wonder for a bit, and stay the most interested.

My Ex Boyfriend Stopped By To See Me

An exboyfriend who shows up unexpectedly is giving off one of the biggest indications that he wants to date or see you again. A phone call wasn’t good enough… a text-message was too impersonal… no, this guy had to physically see you. Such actions are huge – especially considering how hard it must’ve been for your ex to show up without so much as a phone call or email telling you he was coming. In fact, some guys like this scenario because it allows them to make a grand entrance AND catch you completely unprepared. They might feel they’ll get a more honest reaction from you when you don’t know they’re coming, and you know what? They’re probably right.

If you want your ex boyfriend back, let him know you’re not unhappy that he showed up. Don’t be completely thrilled to death either, but be generally accepting of his pop-in visit. Ask him how he’s been, and let him talk about himself for a while. The more he talks, the better your chances of finding out the real reason he came… because he still wants you.

Learning which signals a guy gives off when he’s ready to reconcile is a crucial part of winning him back. You need to be prepared to not only identify these signs, but to also encourage the behavior associated with them. In addition to the signals listed above, you’ll run into many other more subtle hints that your ex boyfriend still loves you: body language, voice inflection, etc… etc… etc… Learn about these signs as well, and know what your opening moves should be when it’s finally time to reconnect with your ex.

Baby dies after being found abandoned behind shop in Gwent, Wales

Saturday, March 20, 2010

According to an announcement from Gwent Police, a baby boy has died after being found abandoned behind a convenience store in Gwent, Wales. The boy, who has not yet been identified, was found behind a Spar convenience store in the town of Cwmcarn at 1815 GMT on Tuesday. The baby was found to be wrapped in a towel which was in a plastic shopping bag. Bystanders who were walking past the scene mistakenly believed that the bag had been unintentionally left there by a person who had visited the gym that is located next to the store.

A 14-year-old boy, who is the son of the man who owns the convenience store, then examinied the bag and discovered the baby. He made a phone call to the emergency services, however, when the baby was taken to Royal Gwent Hospital, it was pronounced dead on arrival. The baby was younger than one day old at the time of his death. A post-mortem examination proved to be indeterminate. Gwent Police have now launched an investigation to try and determine the identity of the baby’s mother.

Gursewak Singh, the father of the person who discovered the baby and the owner of the shop, explained: “We asked friends and colleagues what the bag was doing there, but it didn’t belong to anyone. A boy who works with us said it was just a towel in there and he didn’t open it. In the evening I went out to it and opened it, only saw a towel on top and didn’t look thoroughly. I just thought it was clothes underneath and didn’t want to root through them. I picked it up and hanged it on the gatepost so someone walking by might see it and recognise it as theirs. At about six o’clock there was a power cut and my 14-year-old son went out and picked up the bag and opened it and saw a little head in there. He called his uncle and said: ‘It’s not clothes, come and look’. They came over and saw the baby in there.” Singh commented that this incident “was shocking. We were all devastated. I wish we had checked earlier. If we had gone through the bag we could have made a difference. I’m worried what sort of condition the person who left the bag is in. We are so concerned about her. Other people saw the bag, but nobody thought about it. There could be a baby still alive. I wish we had checked straight away.”

Gwent Police member Superintendent John Burley stated about this case: “We are extremely concerned about the health and wellbeing of the mother of the baby and are appealing for her to come forward to receive any medical treatment she may require. This is a tragic incident which will sadden the local community and our priority at the moment is finding the mother of the baby. I would appeal to anyone who may have been in the vicinity of the Spar store on Thursday morning or afternoon who may be able to offer any information to assist our inquiry.”

Chula Vista, California becomes model for blight control laws in the US

Chula Vista, California becomes model for blight control laws in the US

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

The San Diego, California suburb of Chula Vista has responded to the recent housing crisis with an aggressive blight control ordinance that compels lenders to maintain the appearance of vacant homes. As foreclosures increase both locally and throughout the United States, the one year old ordinance has become a model for other cities overwhelmed by the problem of abandoned homes that decay into neighborhood eyesores.

Chula Vista city code enforcement manager Doug Leeper told the San Diego Union Tribune that over 300 jurisdictions have contacted his office during the past year with inquiries about the city’s tough local ordinance. Coral Springs, Florida, and California towns Stockton, Santee, Riverside County, and Murietta have all modeled recently enacted anti-blight measures after Chula Vista’s. On Wednesday, 8 October, the Escondido City Council also voted to tighten local measures making lenders more accountable for maintenance of empty homes.

Lenders will respond when it costs them less to maintain the property than to ignore local agency requirements.

Under the Chula Vista ordinance lenders become legally responsible for upkeep as soon as a notice of mortgage default gets filed on a vacant dwelling, before actual ownership of the dwelling returns to the lender. Leeper regards that as “the cutting-edge part of our ordinance”. Chula Vista also requires prompt registration of vacant homes and applies stiff fines as high as US$1000 per day for failure to maintain a property. Since foreclosed properties are subject to frequent resale between mortgage brokers, city officials enforce the fines by sending notices to every name on title documents and placing a lien on the property, which prevents further resale until outstanding fines have been paid. In the year since the ordinance went into effect the city has applied $850,000 in fines and penalties, of which it has collected $200,000 to date. The city has collected an additional $77,000 in registration fees on vacant homes.

Jolie Houston, an attorney in San Jose, believes “Lenders will respond when it costs them less to maintain the property than to ignore local agency requirements.” Traditionally, local governments have resorted to addressing blight problems on abandoned properties with public funds, mowing overgrown lawns and performing other vital functions, then seeking repayment afterward. Chula Vista has moved that responsibility to an upfront obligation upon lenders.

That kind of measure will add additional costs to banks that have been hit really hard already and ultimately the cost will be transferred down to consumers and investors.

As one of the fastest growing cities in the United States during recent years, Chula Vista saw 22.6% growth between 2000 and 2006, which brought the city’s population from 173,556 in the 2000 census to an estimated 212,756, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Chula Vista placed among the nation’s 20 fastest growing cities in 2004. A large proportion of local homes were purchased during the recent housing boom using creative financing options that purchasers did not understand were beyond their means. Average home prices in San Diego County declined by 25% in the last year, which is the steepest drop on record. Many homeowners in the region currently owe more than their homes are worth and confront rising balloon payment mortgages that they had expected to afford by refinancing new equity that either vanished or never materialized. In August 2008, Chula Vista’s eastern 91913 zip code had the highest home mortgage default rate in the county with 154 filings and 94 foreclosures, an increase of 154% over one year previously. Regionally, the county saw 1,979 foreclosures in August.

Professionals from the real estate and mortgage industries object to Chula Vista’s response to the crisis for the additional burdens it places on their struggling finances. Said San Diego real estate agent Marc Carpenter, “that kind of measure will add additional costs to banks that have been hit really hard already and ultimately the cost will be transferred down to consumers and investors.” Yet city councils in many communities have been under pressure to do something about increasing numbers of vacant properties. Concentrations of abandoned and neglected homes can attract vandals who hasten the decline of struggling neighborhoods. Jolie Houston explained that city officials “can’t fix the lending problem, but they can try to prevent neighborhoods from becoming blighted.”

CEO Robert Klein of Safeguard, a property management firm, told the Union Tribune that his industry is having difficulty adapting to the rapidly changing local ordinances. “Every day we discover a new ordinance coming out of somewhere”, he complained. Dustin Hobbs, a spokesman from the California Association of Mortgage Bankers agreed that uneven local ordinances are likely to increase the costs of lending. Hobbs advised that local legislation is unnecessary due to California State Senate Bill 1137, which was recently approved to address blight. Yet according to Houston, the statewide measure falls short because it fails to address upkeep needs during the months between the time when foreclosure begins and when the lender takes title.

Eric Bogosian on writing and the creative urge

Thursday, April 17, 2008

Eric Bogosian is one of America’s great multi-dimensional talents. “There’s sort of three different careers, and any one of them could exist by itself, on its own two feet. There was that solo stuff, and then I started writing plays in the late seventies.” Although his work has spanned genres, most readers will recognize Bogosian for his acting, which has included a memorable performance in Woody Allen‘s Deconstructing Harry to co-writing and starring in the Oliver Stone movie Talk Radio (based upon his Pulitzer Prize-nominated play) to playing the bad guy in Under Siege 2 to his current role in Law & Order: Criminal Intent as Captain Danny Ross. They may not know, however, that he had collaborated with Frank Zappa on a album, worked with Sonic Youth, and was a voice on Mike Judge‘s Beavis & Butthead Do America. He started one of New York City’s largest dance companies, The Kitchen, which is still in existence. He starred alongside Val Kilmer in Wonderland and his play Talk Radio was recently revived on Broadway with Liev Schreiber in the role Bogosian wrote and made famous.

Currently at work on his third novel, tentatively titled The Artist, Bogosian spoke with David Shankbone about the craft of writing and his life as a creative.
