2008 YODEX Review: Varied competitions, Vast creations

Monday, May 26, 2008

The 27th Young Designers’ Exhibition 2008, recognized by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) as the largest show of student creations, recently ended Sunday May 18. It was held at the Taipei World Trade Center. Improvements and expansions were seen with 107 academical and industrial units. Different design competitions participated and showcased their products and also received awards.

It’s no doubt that companies related to design and cultural industries want to discover creative talents from academical units in this exhibition. However, most companies still try to showcase different conceptional and applicative products in order to promote Taiwan’s designs into the world market. A typical example is Fora Series, a photo-voltaic product series by the Tsann Kuen Trans-nation Group.

Before entering into their careers, students participated in this show and showcased varied styles that differ from the usual industrial businesspeople. To get more opportunities and in order to interact with the design and cultural industries, students also participated in vast competitions and tried to get the top places. Some students also tried to design conceptional products in conjunction with industrial designs, especially in some design competitions.

In summary, not only did the 2008 YODEX, have companies which can discover talents and showcase achievements of industrial design in the exhibition, but students can make their stages to showcase excellences from their creations in several competitions related to YODEX.

Stop Smoking With Hypnosis Downloads}

Submitted by: Max Kirsten

Theres been a fair amount of press coverage for alternative type remedies recently not least of which is NLP, a hypnosis or hypnotherapy technique that enables patients to do anything from quitting smoking to coping up with stress. The coverage has come about because these modern hypnotherapy techniques really seem to work: and that means you can stop smoking in time for the New Year without using expensive patches, without backsliding and without any of the psychological torment usually associated with quitting the habit.

Smoking is more addictive and can be deadly if not restricted in time. The affects take longer to manifest themselves (usually) but overall the number of people that die from smoking related problems, percentage wise, is very similar to the number of people who die from hard drug related issues. It is apparently harder to go cold turkey from cigarettes than it is from any other harmful addiction: a popular fact amongst the many who try to stop smoking and fail.

Well, as noted, theres a new weapon in town that just might be the deciding factor in many Brits fights against the coffin nails this Christmas. Hypnosis allows people to quit smoking in a completely different way to other methods all of which rely basically on the idea that one chemical addiction can be replaced with a long tailed engagement with another. Eventually, a smoker going down a medicated route to freedom is likely to quit, but the weaning off and replacement stages take so long, and cost so much, that many fall by the wayside.

Using hypnosis to stop smoking, on the other hand, costs proportionately very little indeed and is practically one hundred per cent effective. There are several different hypnotherapy tacks that can be employed to provide the desired result, which of course are suggested to the subject according to an assessment of the one that is likely to have the most positive effect. One of the most positive, widely used and rapid is the NLP or Neuro linguistic programming technique, which helps users to stop smoking by retraining their subconscious into believing either that they dont, or that they do not want to.

The subconscious, as we have all been aware for almost 200 years, is an intensely powerful thing. Hypnotherapy solutions for smokers centre on the idea that the subconscious, as the root of all behaviours, whether good or bad, is the right place to start if you want to alter behaviour. Chemical addiction is obviously a powerful drive but the force that acquiesces to that drive lies in the subconscious. Using hypnotherapy techniques like NLP to stop smoking is a way of getting treatment right to the subconscious mind: like massaging a back muscle to cure chest pains, where those pains are really caused by an out of place muscle by the spine. To continue that analogy chemical replacement, like patches, tries to get people to quit smoking in the same way that an aspirin or paracetamol tries to make them stop feeling pain. It works, but it doesnt address the root problem. Hypnotherapy, on the other hand, does.

Smoke from massive warehouse fire in Buffalo, New York USA can be seen 40 miles away

Monday, May 14, 2007

Buffalo, New York —A massive warehouse complex of at least 5 buildings caught on fire in Buffalo, New York on 111 Tonawanda Street, sending a plume of thick, jet black colored smoke into the air that could be seen as far away as 40 miles.

As of 6:40 a.m., the fire was under control, and firefighters were attempting to stop it from spreading, but could not get to the center of the fire because of severe amounts of debris. Later in the morning, the fire was extinguished.

“The fire is mostly under debris at this point. It’s under control, but it’s under some debris. We really can’t get to it. We’re just going to have to keep on pouring water on it so it doesn’t spread,” said Thomas Ashe, the fire chief for the North Buffalo based fire division who also added that at one point, at least 125 firefighters were on the scene battling the blaze. One suffered minor injures and was able to take himself to the hospital to seek medical attention.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. as many as 3 explosions rocked the warehouse sending large mushroom clouds of thick black smoke into the air. After the third explosion, heat could be felt more than 100 feet away. The fire started in the front, one story building then quickly spread to three others, but fire fighters managed to stop the flames from spreading onto the 3 story building all the way at the back.

According to a Buffalo Police officer, who wished not to be named, the fire began at about 7:00 p.m. [Eastern time], starting as a one alarm fire. By 8:00 p.m., three fire companies were on the scene battling the blaze. Police also say that a smaller fire was reported in the same building on Saturday night, which caused little damage.

At the start of the fire, traffic was backed up nearly 4 miles on the 198 expressway going west toward the 190 Interstate and police had to shut down the Tonawanda street exit because the road is too close to the fire.

At one point, traffic on the 198 was moving so slow, at least a dozen people were seen getting out of their cars and walking down the expressway to watch the fire. That prompted as many as 10 police cars to be dispatched to the scene to force individuals back into their cars and close off one of the 2 lanes on the westbound side.

One woman, who wished not to be named as she is close to the owner of the warehouse, said the building is filled with “classic cars, forklifts, and money” and that owner “does not have insurance” coverage on the property. The building is not considered abandoned, but firefighters said that it is vacant.

Officials in Fort Erie, Ontario were also swamped with calls to fire departments when the wind blew the smoke over the Niagra River and into Canada.

It is not known what caused the fire, but a car is suspected to have caught on fire and there are reports from police and hazmat crews, that there were also large barrels of diesel fuel being stored in one building. Firefighters say the cause of the blaze is being treated as “suspicious.” The ATF is investigating the fire and will bring dogs in to search the debris.

The Wii, Nintendo’s next generation console, launches in North America

Sunday, November 19, 2006

Nintendo has released its newest video game console in North America. Known as the Wii, the system and games have an MSRP of US$249.99 and US$49.99 respectively. The North American release is to be followed by the December 2nd launch in Japan and the December 8th launch in Europe.

Launched officially at midnight, more than a thousand people gathered in New York’s Time Square to be among the first to buy one of the Wii. In contrast to the crowds that have challenged crowd control officials over the last two days in connection with the launch of Sony’s Playstation 3, the Wii crowds have been much calmer. Many observers attribute this to the fact that Nintendo had more than ten times as many Wii consoles available on launching day than Sony did for their PS3 that had been hounded by part shortages in manufacturing right up to the day of launch.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said that several tough choices had been made in the design of the Wii. The company decided to develop a new way of playing games with revolutionary controllers instead of following the PS3 and the Xbox down the road of stunning graphic and multimedia options. This produced a console with a much talked-about sensor/controller design and the lowest price point of the three major consoles. While not having a DVD player or high-definition TV capabilities, the Wii retails for about $250 while its competitors the Xbox 360 and PS3 retail for about $400 and $600 respectively.

While the Wii will launch with several games available, one of its advertised advantages is that the new console is largely compatible with older games made for the GameCube, giving the new console an instant and extensive launching library. A GameCube controller will be needed to play GameCube games with the Wii. Several hardware items that GameCube games may be expecting, such as the modem or broadband adapter or the GameBoy player are not supported on the Wii.

Across the country in Los Angeles about 500 people were waiting for the doors to open at Universal City Walk’s Game Stop store. Fearing that the Wii introduction might be as contentious as the PS3 debut just a few days ago, the store handed out numbered wristbands to the throng. No problems were reported.

Wikinews interviews Steve Kissing, independent candidate for US President

Saturday, February 16, 2008

While nearly all coverage of the 2008 Presidential election has focused on the Democratic and Republican candidates, there are small political parties offering candidates, and those who choose to run without a party behind them, independents.

Wikinews is interviewing some of these citizens who are looking to become the 43rd person elected to serve their nation from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

Our second interview is with Cincinnati, Ohio’s Steve Kissing, a divorced father of two who is a creative director at an advertising agency.

Macomb, New York Councilman Steve Burke took some time to speak with Wikinews about his campaign for the U.S. Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.

Burke, an insurance adjuster and farmer, was elected councilman in Brookhaven, New York in 1979. He left the town after being accused and found not guilty of bribery in the 1980s. Since 1987 he has served as Macomb councilman off-and-on and currently holds the post. From 1993 to 1996 and 1999 to 2002 he worked as chairman of the Democratic Party of St. Lawrence County, New York. Among his many political campaigns, Burke unsuccessfully sought the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 1992 and recently attempted to run for U.S. Congress in 2014 but too many of his ballot petition signatures were found invalid. Burke filed with the Federal Election Commission to run for president in the 2016 election on September 18, 2015 and has qualified for the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire Primary.

With Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn?, Burke discusses his political background, his 2016 presidential campaign, and his policy proposals.

Australian health workers to close intensive care units in Victoria next week

Australian health workers to close intensive care units in Victoria next week

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Members of Australia’s Health Services Union (HSU) will go on strike in Victoria next week in a dispute over stalled wage and career structure negotiations. Over 5000 physiotherapists, speech pathologists and radiation therapists will walk off the job next week, effectively closing the state’s 68 largest health services.

The strike will force the closure of intensive care units and emergency departments across the state.

It is feared the strike could continue into Easter.

National secretary of the HSU, Kathy Jackson said admissions would be crippled, while intensive care patients would have to be evacuated to New South Wales, Tasmania and South Australia as hospitals will not be able to perform tests or administer treatment.

“When an ambulance shows up you can’t admit a patient without an X-ray being available, you can’t intubate them and you can’t operate on them,” she said.

“If something goes wrong in an ICU you need to be able to X-ray, use nuclear medicine or any diagnostic procedure,” said Ms Jackson.

Ms Jackson said the HSU offered arbitration last year, but the state government refused. “They’re not interested in settling disputes, they hope that we are just going to go away.”

“We’re not going away, we’ve gone back and balloted the whole public health workforce in Victoria, those ballots were successful, 97 percent approval rating,” she said.

The HSU is urging the government to commence serious negotiations to resolve the dispute before industrial action commenced.

The government has offered the union a 3.25 per cent pay increase, in line with other public sector workers but the union has demanded more, but stopped short of specifying a figure.

Victorian Premier John Brumby said the claim would be settled according to the government’s wages policy. “The Government is always willing and wanting to sit down and negotiate with the relevant organisations . . . we have a wages policy based around an increase of 3.25 per cent and, above that, productivity offset,” he told parliament.

The union claims it is also arguing against a lack of career structure, which has caused many professionals to leave the health service. Ms Jackson said wages and career structures in Victoria were behind other states.

Victorian Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu said he was not in support of the proposed strike and called on the government to meet with unions. “There could not be a more serious threat to our health system than has been announced today.”

“We now have to do whatever is possible to stop this strike from proceeding,” he said.

The opposition leader will meet with the union at 11:30 AM today.

Victorian Hospitals Industry Association industrial relations services manager Simon Chant said hospitals were looking at the possible impact and warned that patients may have to be evacuated interstate if the strike goes ahead.

Sai Baba upsets Telangana activists

Sunday, February 18, 2007File:Sathyasaibaba.jpg

Indian spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba, 81, found himself embroiled in a political row after his recent remarks characterising the partition of the state of Andhra Pradesh (AP) as a “great sin”.

On a recent visit to Chennai he publicly spoke out against the proposed partition of India’s fourth largest state, calling such a move a “mahapapam” (great sin) and claimed that there was no demand from the people to bifurcate AP into Telangana and Andhra states.

The comments caused an outcry among pro-Telangana activists who angrily voiced their protests in street marches and attacks on the Sivam building, the Baba’s temple in Hyderabad, which was staffed by a few devotees. Shouting anti-Sai Baba slogans, the protestors pulled down a large picture of the holy man and trampled on it before taking it outside and setting it on fire. An effigy of the Baba was also reported to have been burnt, and twenty protestors were arrested following several police complaints.

Nipple Bleaching Products: A Safe Way To Lighten Dark Nipples?

By Ava Cantos.

Millions of women, as well as men for that matter, are concerned about the color of their nipples. While some prefer the look of dark nipples, most would prefer to have pink, light nipples. Unfortunately, there are many skin bleaching products on the market which contain dangerous ingredients including the internationally banned substance Hydroquinone.

Using nipple bleaching products that contain Hydroquinone puts the user at risk of damaging their nipples or whatever other body part they apply the solution to. Therefore, if you have dark nipples and would like to lighten them, avoid any product that contains Hydroquinone.

This specific ingredient has already been banned throughout the world and while skin bleaching products that contain a small percentage of it may not hurt you, the product has none-the-less been linked to the development of cancer.

Despite these dangers, some unethical skin bleaching companies continue to re-brand some of their existing skin bleaching serums that contain high levels of Hydroquinone, and re-sell them as nipple bleaching creams/gels. This is not only unethical and irresponsible, but is also dangerous as well.

The reality is that if you want a safe nipple bleaching treatment, you are better off spending a few extra dollars to buy a product from a company that does not rely on using dangerous ingredients. The very cheap nipple lightening products out there should raise some red flags as this kind of cosmetic procedure is not one you want to cut corners on.

How to Get Rid of Dark Nipples

While there are some natural remedies out there that have been used with some success to lighten dark nipples including using lemon juice, the reality is that using an effective skin bleaching serum is the most effective and quickest way to help lighten a dark nipple.

History of Skin Lightening

Skin bleaching has been around for hundreds of years dating back to when the division of cultural classes were determined based on the whiteness of ones skin in addition to family history and financial status. This was because those with light, white skin, especially in Asian cultures were considered the elite as they were able to afford to not have to work in the fields and therefore avoid having their skin tanned.

This bias still continues today as skin whitening products continue to thrive all over the world especially in countries like Japan, China, Thailand, and India. While America is still considered by many to be the epicenter of vanity, tanned skin continues to be in vogue in America.

However, as America is a melting pot, many Americans continue to purchase skin bleaching products such as those used to lighten moles, freckles, and intimate areas such as products developed to lighten dark nipples.

In conclusion, the dangers of using a nipple bleaching cream are very low as long as you ensure that that product does not contain Hydroquinone. Remember that while self-improvement is essential in order to maintain a healthy self image, vanity should not come at the expense of your health and well-being. Be safe, research each potential product thoroughly, and only use nipple bleaching creams or gels that list their ingredients. This way you can ensure that you are not purchasing a product that contains Hydroquinone.
