Ford Mustangs have been commended for years on their consistently flashy looks and timeless aura. As of late, Ford’s muscle car has been matched and nearly surpassed by the Dodge Challenger and latest version of the Chevrolet Camaro. Ford met this challenge head on by immediately delving into new designs for their 2010 model that would help them stay at the top.

The newest Mustang shows changed details on almost every element of the car. The body of the car is redesigned with smoother more rounded features rather than the sharp, flatter features of the older versions. The grille is narrower and the signature GT fog lamps are redesigned. In their place are headlights that resemble those found on the 1970 Mustang. It also has the option of 19′ tires. The rear of the car has been modernized from the sharp rear wing to the new more rounded rear lip spoiler once again reminding you of one of their former models of Ford Mustang or even the older versions of the Mercury vehicles.

As far as the interior goes, previous models were described as barren and arid, with what felt like cheap plastic for the seats, and a squeaky chassis. I can’t completely agree with those opinions, as I have been a die hard fan of the mustang for years. However, I will agree that this time around they have put a wonderful new luxurious feel to the interior. It has roughly the same interior designs but with softer materials, and once again, a more modernized, rounded appearance. The center console is now non-existent to allow more room for shifting gears. Ford has also nixed the ashtray and relocated the electrical socket to the top of the dashboard rather than beneath the radio, which is reportedly to make it easier to power your navigation device.

As of yet, there are no customer reviews for performance with the new versus the old, so for now we’ll just have to take Fords word for it. The 2010 Ford Mustang GT comes equipped with a 4.6-litre V8, which is rated at 315 horsepower, 15 more than last years Mustang. It will run on unleaded fuel as well as premium, but is reported to get a better performance with the premium. The new ‘Stang goes from 0-60 mph in just over 5 seconds. The only thing Ford did not seem to update about this new version of the is the live axle design. Rather than switching to an independent rear suspension (IRS) they decided to stick with their design that has seen them through many years. This came as a surprise to those who were aware that both the Dodge Challenger and the Chevrolet Camaro come equipped with the independent rear suspension, but according to experts, much of the decision behind keeping the live axel was money motivated. There’s no way to know for sure until the accounting paperwork is leaked, but it is rumored to cost $100 per vehicle to convert to the IRS. Some even guesstimate up to $300!

Either way, the $27,995 base price of the 2010 Ford Mustang GT seems altogether a fair price for the fabulously designed car you’re getting. Once again, Ford stepped up their game with the Mustang, standing up to their competition, the new Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro. The 2010 Ford Mustang, new and redesigned, remains as timeless as ever.

There’s nothing one person can do that will help the environment more than to drive and maintain a vehicle in an environmentally friendly manner. And environmentally aware driving pays. It can help save on gas and car repairs, extend the life of your car and tires and contribute to safety. To get you on the road to ecodriving, here are some tips:

Don’t gun It

Overcome the impulse to put the pedal to the metal. When you suddenly depress or release the gas pedal, the engine burns only a small portion of the gas fed into it. Sudden accelerations and decelerations send fuel straight out the tailpipe.

Get the right gas cap

A snug cap is essential to keep fuel evaporation from fouling the air. Take a look at yours. If it’s damaged or just won’t screw on tightly, buy a replacement at an auto parts store. Also check whether you have a vented or non-vented cap. A nonvented cap prevents gas from evaporating. Your owner’s manual will tell you whether you can switch.

Use a warm car

If you have more than one car, use the one with the warmest engine. That cuts back on cold starts, a cause of high emissions and engine wear. Take your car for a run if you’re a city driver, take your car out for exercise over the weekend. We’re not talking about a freeway spree; simply get out on the highway for a half-hour at 55 mph. This car-fitness regimen will do wonders for engine efficiency by burning up deposits and contaminants that have built up on the engine.

Pay attention to oil

Do you know what kind of oil your car uses? Many people don’t. But the type you choose will have a dramatic effect on what comes out of your tailpipe. Use energy conserving oil. It increases fuel economy and reduces emissions.

Don’t Idle

Emissions of carbon monoxide and other toxins are highest when your car idles. So keep idling to a minimum. And remember: Idling is not the most efficient way to warm your engine. Instead, get the car moving at moderate speed. If you can stand to keep the heat off a few minutes, do. The heater diverts energy from the engine and slows its warming.

Check for leaking fluids

Fluids that puddle under your Porsche also evaporate and pollute the air. Next time you pull out, check your driveway for leaks.

Reduce unecessary driving

Instead of circling and re-circling the mall in search of a parking space, land in the first spot you see. Then walk. Plan errands to make the most efficient use of your driving rime.

Check your tire pressure

Flabby tires make your car work harder and diminish fuel efficiency. So make sure yours stay fully inflated. The appropriate pressure is printed on the sidewall of the tire.

Sample public transportation

For an adventure, take a break from driving and hop on a bike or a bus instead. Public transportation is the most planet-friendly way to get around. Use it whenever you can.

Fire kills eleven at oil worker housing in Alkhobar, Saudi Arabia

A fire in the eastern Saudi city of Alkhobar tore through a housing complex for oil workers yesterday, killing eleven, according to civil officials.

The Radium complex is rented by oil firm Aramco for their employees. According to nearby resident Mohammed Siddique the fire broke out early in the morning. Siddique says the building contains locals, as well as Westerners and Asians. The cause is unclear but the civil defence ministry tweeted “Cars and furniture caught fire in the basement of one of the towers”.

Over 200 people were injured. Firefighters scaled the burning tower on ladders, and helicopters were on-scene. Other towers in the complex were evacuated. Thick smoke from the blaze complicated rescue efforts.

Aramco CEO Amin H. Nasser said the firm is “deeply saddened to learn of the fatalities and injuries. We offer heartfelt condolences to the families. Our immediate priority is to provide full support to those affected by this tragic incident.” Aramco, which produces and exports more crude oil than any competitor worldwide, say the fire is under investigation.

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

U.S. wants to impose its “no-fly” list on most Canadian domestic flights

The government of Canada is fighting to keep Washington from having access to passenger lists for Canada’s domestic flights. The Canadian transport minister Jean Lapierre said two-thirds of Canada’s domestic flights at some point cross through American air space. The Minister said he may have to re-route them (around U.S. airspace) rather than breach the privacy rights of domestic Canadian passengers.

In plans which are not yet finalized, Washington recently warned Canada (and other countries) the U.S. intends to require that its no-fly list procedures apply to all foreign airlines which pass through U.S. airspace. After 9/11, a watch list of suspected terrorists was created by the U.S. that bars those on the list from air travel within its borders.

On Wednesday, Lapierre said it’s a “very hot issue,” and that he’s working to protect the privacy of Canadians.

“I’m very worried about it. We don’t think it’s a good idea that Canadians travelling from one (Canadian) city to another would have to be checked under the American no-fly list.” Lapierre said. He estimates that nearly two-thirds of the 278,000 yearly flights between Canadian cities cross over the U.S. border. Most major flight zones from urban centers in Canada are in its southern portion, close to the U.S. where even winds might push a plane across the border.

If the matter can not be resolved, Lapierre said, “We would have to take a northern route, which would be much more expensive.” Yahoo! News Canada reports that Lapierre intends to lobby U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta against the changes.

Last year, the Canadian province of British Columbia put controls on firms that handle an individual’s personal data that prevents them from sharing private information on Canadians with U.S. authorities. The issue goes to Canada’s sovereignty of its citizens and the U.S. sovereignty of its airspace.

The historically close relations between Canada and the U.S. was evident during the recent Virgin Atlantic incident, where a flight was intercepted by 2 Canadian CF-18 jet fighters. They were scrambled from Quebec to escort the inter-continental flight originating from London to the Halifax International Airport after a hijacking signal, an apparent accident, was sent from the plane. The plane was detained in Halifax on Friday for approximately four hours. Ultimately it was cleared, and landed safely at its original destination in John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.

Both the ACLU and the Electronic Privacy Information Center are involved in lawsuits against the U.S. government relating to no-fly lists. EPIC has received documents under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act which it says “establish that the TSA administers two lists: a “no-fly” list and a “selectee” list, which requires the passenger to go through additional security measures. The names are provided to air carriers through Security Directives or Emergency Amendments and are stored in their computer systems so that an individual with a name that matches the list can be flagged when getting a boarding pass. A “no-fly” match requires the agent to call a law enforcement officer to detain and question the passenger. In the case of a Selectee, an “S” or special mark is printed on their boarding pass and the person receives additional screening at security.”

Buffalo, New York —Judge Justice Christopher Burns of the New York State Supreme Court has ordered a halt to an emergency demolition on a 19th century stable and livery on 428-430 Jersey Street in Buffalo, New York that partially collapsed on Wednesday June 11, initially causing at least 15 homes to be evacuated. At least two homes remain evacuated.

Burns orders that both the city and the group Save The Livery (www.savethelivery.com) have to come to an agreement on what to do with the building, and try to work out ways of saving at least some portions if it including the facade, side walls and a lift tower. Save The Livery is comprised of concerned area residents who have grown to love the building’s historic and unique character. On June 14, they won a temporary restraining order to stop demolition. The court ruled that the city was only allowed to remove material in immediate danger to residents and pedestrians, but stated that the demolition could only be performed with “hand tools.” The court also ordered that any rubble which had fallen into neighboring yards when the building collapsed, to be removed.

“It is in the interest of the city to have a safe environment–but also important to maintain a sense of historical preservation,” stated Burns in his ruling. Burns has given the sides until tomorrow (Friday June 20) to come to an agreement and has ordered both parties to return to court at 9:30 a.m. (eastern time) “sharp.” Activists of Save The Livery urge supporters of the stable to “fill the courtroom” to show “continued and ongoing support.” The hearing is scheduled to take place at 25 Delaware Avenue in the Supreme Court building, 3rd Floor, trial part 19.

Currently the building is owned by Bob Freudenheim who has several building violations against him because of the buildings poor condition. He has received at least five violations in three months and residents who live near the building state that Freudenheim should be “100% responsible” for his actions. Many are afraid that if the building is demolished, Freudenheim’s charges of neglect will be abolished.

On June 17, developer and CEO of Savarino Companies, Sam Savarino was at the site of the stable, discussing the building with residents and preservationists. In 2006, Savarino proposed and planned The Elmwood Village Hotel, a ‘botique’ hotel on the Southeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues. The project was later withdrawn after residents filed a lawsuit against Savarino and the city. Wikinews extensively covered the story, and contacted Savarino for his professional opinion on the building.

“[I would] love to see it preserved. I was there to see if there was anything we could do to help, to see if anything can be salvaged. I just want to see the right thing happen, and so does the city,” stated Savarino to Wikinews who added that he was allowed inside the building for a brief period.

“The side walls are beyond repair. The roof has rotted and it could come down at any time,” added Savarino who also said that the building “below the second floor appears to be stable.” He also states that the back wall of the building, which borders several homes, appears to be intact.

“Eliminating the back wall could be a problem for the neighbors. It is not unreasonable to leave at least 12 feet” of the back wall standing, added Savarino.

Savarino did not say if he was interested in buying the property, but did state, “I am sure there are a couple of people interested” in buying the property. On Thursday, Buffalo News reported that a “businessman” might be interested in purchasing the property, though Wikinews is not able to independently confirm the report. Savarino says that with the property still slated for emergency demolition, a potential buyer could face tax fees of nearly US$300,000.

Freudenheim gave the city permission to demolish the building on Thursday June 12 during an emergency Preservation Board meeting, because he would not be “rehabilitating the building anytime soon.” Freudenheim, along with his wife Nina, were part-owners of the Hotel Lenox at 140 North Street in Buffalo and were advocates to stop the Elmwood Village Hotel. They also financially supported a lawsuit in an attempt to stop the hotel from being built. Though it is not known exactly how long Freudenheim has owned the stable, Wikinews has learned that he was the owner while fighting to stop the hotel from being built. Residents say that he has been the owner for at least 22 years.

The building was first owned by a company called White Bros. and was used as a stable for a farm which once covered the land around the building for several blocks. The Buffalo Fire Department believes the building was built around 1814, while the city property database states it was built in 1870. Servants and workers of the farm were housed inside resident quarters situated at the rear of the building on what is now Summer Street, but are now cottages where area residents currently reside. Some date as far back as 1829.

At about 1950, the stable was converted into an automobile body shop and gasoline station.A property record search showed that in 1950 at least four fuel storage tanks were installed on the property. Two are listed as 550 square feet while the other two are 2,000 square feet. All of the tanks are designated as a TK4, which New York State says is used for “below ground horizontal bulk fuel storage.” The cost of installing a tank of that nature according to the state, at that time, included the tank itself, “excavation and backfill,” but did not include “the piping, ballast, or hold-down slab orring.” It is not known if the tanks are still on the property, but residents are concerned the city was not taking the precautions to find out.

The arrest warrant issued for Wikileaks’ editor-in-chief Julian Assange has been quashed by Stockholm Chief Prosecutor Eva Finné, who said in a press release “I am of the opinion that there is no reason to suspect that he has committed a rape.” The press officer of the Swedish Prosecution Authority says that he is still suspected of molestation, and that neither police nor prosecutors have yet been able to contact Assange. Assange had this morning said that he was going to hand himself in to police but also said that the accusations against him were false. The investigation is continuing.

A warrant for Assange’s arrest was issued on Friday evening after the Stockholm police informed prosecutors that he had been accused of rape. According to Expressen’s sources two women between 20 and 30 years old are the alleged victims. Police and prosecutor Maria Häljebo Kjellstrand told Swedish news agency TT that the alleged molestation took place in Stockholm on the night of 13–14 August and the alleged rape happened “later” in Enköping. (Expressen’s sources say the alleged rape occurred on Tuesday.) Beyond that they have refused to comment. Sources told Expressen that the two women knew each other and “knew that they had been the victims of the same thing”. A source says that the women were afraid of Assange’s “position of power” and had been reluctant to make a formal report to the police. However, on Sunday one of his accusers was interviewed by Aftonbladet and denied that they were scared of Assange: “It is wrong to say that we were frightened of Assange and that we hadn’t wanted to report him for that reason. He’s not violent and I do not feel threatened by him.”

Assange was in Sweden last week to talk about his work and to defend Wikileaks’ publication of the Afghan War Diary, a set of tens of thousands of secret US military documents whose publication has angered the Pentagon and the Obama administration. He had also met Swedish Pirate Party leader Rickard Falkvinge and signed a deal in which the party agreed to provide Wikileaks with server space. The Pirate Party is continuing its cooperation with Wikileaks despite the allegations against Assange.

Assange has denied the allegations in e-mails to Swedish media and on Wikileaks’ Twitter feed, saying “the charges are without basis and their issue at this moment is deeply disturbing.” An official statement on the Wikileaks blog says: “We are deeply concerned about the seriousness of these allegations. We the people behind WikiLeaks think highly of Julian and he has our full support. While Julian is focusing on his defenses and clearing his name, WikiLeaks will be continuing its regular operations.”
