Water level rising in Chinese rivers, further flooding expected

Thursday, June 19, 2008

Further rain has continued to fall across southern China after the country was devastated by floods earlier this week.

176 people have been confirmed to have died as a result of the flooding, and around 50 more are officially missing. Xinhua, the state news agency in China, has reported that the flooding in the Pearl River Delta was the worst in the area for over fifty years.

The Chinese government says it evacuated 111,476 in the Sichuan Province. In Wenchuan County, 72,000 were relocated. Over the past week some 1.3 million people have reportedly fled their homes.

The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) issued a warning on the situation before the first wave of flooding. “Faced with the increasingly severe rain and flood situation, at 16 o’clock of June 12, Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters of Guangxi urgently started level 2 flood control emergency response and required the relevant departments and places to prepare immediately so as to ensure the work of flood control and drought relief,” the CMA said in a statement released late last week.

Global markets plunge

Friday, October 10, 2008

Stock markets across the world have fallen sharply with several seeing the biggest drop in their history.

Asian markets saw the biggest sell-off. The Nikkei dropped 9.62% to reach a 20 year low. Japan also saw a collapse of a mid-size insurance company, Yamato Life Insurance Company, which declared bankruptcy. The Hang Seng, which was one of the few markets that was positive yesterday, fell 7.19%. Australia dropped by 8.4% and South Korea saw a 9% fall.

In Europe, markets dropped at the open with the FTSE losing 11%. They have recovered only sightly with all European markets losing more than 5%. The European sell off was more about the Asian lows then any specific news. European banks and financial institutes saw the most selling. Also, oil related companies saw large drops as an result of an expected decrease in oil consumption.

The U.S. markets opened lower with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling below 8,000, before recovering slightly. President George W. Bush made an address on the economy and said markets were being “driven by uncertainty and fear.”

Oil has seen losses of more than US$6 in trading with the current price of a barrel of oil less than $80. This is a year low for oil. News also came out that OPEC will hold an emergency meeting on November 18 to discuss the falling price of oil.

Charities, such as Cats Protection, today said that they have lost much of their funds in collapsing banks. Cats Protection had a total of £11.2 million saved in the now-collapsed Kaupthing bank.

The British National Council for Voluntary Organisations said that 60 of its 6,500 have lost money due to the collapse of banks.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell to its lowest level in five years at 8,579.19, falling 679 points in one day. This, at 7.3%, is the eleventh largest percentage fall in the history of the index. The growth then continued, with the index being up over 150 points on the start of the day at one point.

The index, did however, recover, and as of 19:30 UTC was up 17.68 points, or 0.21%, pushing the index up to almost 8600.

Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Avalon Partners, commented on these massive falls. “What we’ve seen here was one big margin call that just kept feeding on itself, so the opposite could happen. But you need a catalyst,” he said. “I’m more convinced now than ever that this market has made a bottom. The capitulation came when we breached 8,000,” he continued. “It doesn’t mean we can’t go back and revisit that level.”

The UK’s FTSE 100 index fell dramatically to close below 4000, in the index’s worst week in history. This is despite the fact that just a few days ago the index was above 5000, and the index peaked above 5500 in September. The FTSE 100 index has fallen by 41% this year.

Barclays Wealth analyst Henk Potts commented on this massive fall. “We are drowning in a sea of red numbers,” he claimed. “Investors are concerned about the exacerbation of the credit crunch and the gloomy forecasts for economic growth. The reality is that most investors have been spooked by the sheer pressure that the credit crunch is putting on the global economy.”

The Japanese Nikkei 225 has recorded it’s third biggest drop in history with a massive sell-off in the exchange that has resulted in USD 250 billion being knocked of the index’s value.

Toyota, which is the second largest carmaker in the world, fell by the largest amount in 21 years, while Elpida Memory, the world’s largest manufacturer of computer memory, dropped in value to a record low.

Masafumi Oshiden, a fund manager in Toyota commented on the drop.”It’s capitulation,” he said. “There are lots of forced sellers. If you’re a fund that’s going bust you need to close out all your positions.”

George W. Bush commented on the financial situation earlier today. “Over the past few days, we have witnessed a startling drop in the stock market — much of it driven by uncertainty and fear,” he said. “This has been a deeply unsettling period for the American people. Many of our citizens have serious concerns about their retirement accounts, their investments, and their economic well-being.”

Bush then continued by promoting the government’s plan’s to get through the crises. “Here’s what the American people need to know: that the United States government is acting; we will continue to act to resolve this crisis and restore stability to our markets. We are a prosperous nation with immense resources and a wide range of tools at our disposal. We’re using these tools aggressively.”

Gordon Brown, the UK Prime Minister, also spoke on the economy. “I think we quickly realised that we cannot solve the problems we have got as a result of the sub-prime market collapse simply by improving liquidity,” he said speaking in Birmingham to business leaders earlier today. “That would simply not be enough to deal with the bigger problem of rebuilding the banking system for the future and restoring trust is a fundamental element of that.”

Jim Flaherty, the Canadian minister for finance, also commented today on the recent incidents in the economy. “It is important to underline that Canada’s banks and other financial institutions are sound, well capitalized and less leveraged than their international peers,” he claimed. “Our mortgage system is sound. Canadian households have smaller mortgages relative both to the value of their homes and to their disposable incomes than in the U.S.”

“”However, it is becoming increasingly clear that the continuing disruption of global credit markets, which has been severe and protracted, is making it difficult for our financial institutions to raise long-term funding. This is beginning to affect the availability of mortgage loans and other types of credit in Canada,” he continued. “The Government has therefore decided to act to address the current scarcity of private sector lending to Canadian mortgage markets and lending markets overall. This is going to make loans and mortgages more available and more affordable for ordinary Canadians and businesses.”

Ice Fishing Rod Blanks And Where To Find Them

    More On This Topic:

Ice Fishing Rod Blanks and Where To Find Them

    by

    smhomier

Ice Fishing Rod Blank (s) come in several sizes, but the norm is a 28 inch blank. One of the largest and well known dealers that stock these are Merrick Tackle Company out of New York. Moreover, they are recognized as one of the largest wholesaler s of rod components in the country.

Made by American Marathon. They come in (fiberglass only). Their sizes are (21 inch) 53.3 mm, (32 inch) 81.3 mm, or (50 inch) 127 mm. If you prefer a different size just cut the rod blank butt or tip to accommodate the size that you want. Obviously, cutting at the tip will always have a sensitivity change to your pole.

Ice Fishing Rod Blank (s) come painted black with orange tip or unpainted plain opaque white.

Ice Fishing Rod Blank (s) manufactured by St. Croix is a solid carbon ice blank – Color: Matte Gray Finish. They are of the best quality that one can buy on the market today. They come in spinning ultra-fast action. Length sizes are 24 or 28 inch.

Ice Fishing Rod Blank (s), if you prefer graphite and contrary to what you may have thought, can also be engineered from used 1 or 2 piece rods. They can be from poles that you no longer use or can be readily found at garage or estate sales. Many builders should take advantage of the resources that are out there. Just do some investigating and go garage shopping and one can find some pretty good deals out there.

Moreover, when using your own, garage or estate sale rods consideration should be also taken if considering cutting off old ferrules. More often then not, we leave the existing male ferrules on. They will be unseen in the rods handle. Sometimes, due to rod builders choice, they are cut off to change the length and sensitivity.

Most rod blanks come in ultra-light, light, medium or heavy. Striking power should be considered here also. Striking power has to do with the species of fish that you re going after. Striking power equals the point at which the pole will bend when a fish attacks your lure or bait.

Some anglers prefer using more sensitive poles so that they can feel every nibble while others prefer a bit more heavier pole so they do not have to worry about breakage.

Line guides, (depending on the length) should, as opposed to standard rods, be closer together. We prefer having them closer together especially towards the tip. Also, larger line guide eyes are recommended due to possible ice build-up.

Rod handles, (we like) cork but, if you prefer, graphite handles are available. Also, cork can be adapted to any length you want. We find that a longer handle gives you better leverage when bringing in a larger species of fish.

And finally, when ice fishing, always take out several different poles so that you can change direction at anytime.

And, as always, good luck and good fishing!

Wolfram Research’s new product Alpha to compete with Google and Wikipedia

    Monday, March 9, 2009

Wolfram Research Inc., makers of Mathematica and A New Kind of Science, have released a limited alpha of their new web service Wolfram Alpha. Wolfram Alpha is described by CEO Stephen Wolfram as a “computational knowledge engine.” Unlike Google, Yahoo! and other traditional web search engines that rely on statistical methods for retrieving online documents, Wolfram Alpha answers factual questions in the way that Wikipedia does, except it relies on analytical methods instead of human-generated documents.

Although the product is still in a limited release some details about its operation and design have been revealed by Wolfram on his blog, and by Nova Spivack who recently interviewed Wolfram about Wolfram Alpha. The product is available on the Web as a single search box reminiscent of Google’s main search page. The search queries can be entered in natural language and the natural language system will parse the query and use models of knowledge (ontologies) and human-curated data to return an answer including graphs and other representations. The ontologies and data are managed by Wolfram employees who must input new ontologies and data by hand or, occasionally, with the assistance of programmatic tools. It is expected that an Application Programming Interface (API) will eventually be available, although it is not known what the API will be used for.

Unlike traditional search engines Wolfram Alpha does not search online documents, and thus does not return answers to “fuzzy” questions, such as opinion or advice. Instead, the scope of answers is limited to the knowledge that has already been modeled and encoded in the ontologies and the associated data. In this way the system can generate knowledge that was previously unknown. It is thought that while Wolfram will concentrate on scientific and technical information the system may eventually be able to answer questions in other domains, such as stock information, geography and history. In theory, any question with a factual answer could be answered by Wolfram Alpha.

Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life

    Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Last night HBO premiered I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. Since its inception, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has made headlines and raised eyebrows. They are almost single-handedly responsible for the movement against animal testing and their efforts have raised the suffering animals experience in a broad spectrum of consumer goods production and food processing into a cause célèbre.

PETA first made headlines in the Silver Spring monkeys case, when Alex Pacheco, then a student at George Washington University, volunteered at a lab run by Edward Taub, who was testing neuroplasticity on live monkeys. Taub had cut sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys’ fingers, hands, arms, legs; with some of the monkeys, he had severed the entire spinal column. He then tried to force the monkeys to use their limbs by exposing them to persistent electric shock, prolonged physical restraint of an intact arm or leg, and by withholding food. With footage obtained by Pacheco, Taub was convicted of six counts of animal cruelty—largely as a result of the monkeys’ reported living conditions—making them “the most famous lab animals in history,” according to psychiatrist Norman Doidge. Taub’s conviction was later overturned on appeal and the monkeys were eventually euthanized.

    PETA was born.

In the subsequent decades they ran the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty against Europe’s largest animal-testing facility (footage showed staff punching beagle puppies in the face, shouting at them, and simulating sex acts while taking blood samples); against Covance, the United State’s largest importer of primates for laboratory research (evidence was found that they were dissecting monkeys at its Vienna, Virginia laboratory while the animals were still alive); against General Motors for using live animals in crash tests; against L’Oreal for testing cosmetics on animals; against the use of fur for fashion and fur farms; against Smithfield Foods for torturing Butterball turkeys; and against fast food chains, most recently against KFC through the launch of their website kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.

They have launched campaigns and engaged in stunts that are designed for media attention. In 1996, PETA activists famously threw a dead raccoon onto the table of Anna Wintour, the fur supporting editor-in-chief of Vogue, while she was dining at the Four Seasons in New York, and left bloody paw prints and the words “Fur Hag” on the steps of her home. They ran a campaign entitled Holocaust on your Plate that consisted of eight 60-square-foot panels, each juxtaposing images of the Holocaust with images of factory farming. Photographs of concentration camp inmates in wooden bunks were shown next to photographs of caged chickens, and piled bodies of Holocaust victims next to a pile of pig carcasses. In 2003 in Jerusalem, after a donkey was loaded with explosives and blown up in a terrorist attack, Newkirk sent a letter to then-PLO leader Yasser Arafat to keep animals out of the conflict. As the film shows, they also took over Jean-Paul Gaultier‘s Paris boutique and smeared blood on the windows to protest his use of fur in his clothing.

The group’s tactics have been criticized. Co-founder Pacheco, who is no longer with PETA, called them “stupid human tricks.” Some feminists criticize their campaigns featuring the Lettuce Ladies and “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads as objectifying women. Of their Holocaust on a Plate campaign, Anti-Defamation League Chairman Abraham Foxman said “The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent.” (Newkirk later issued an apology for any hurt it caused). Perhaps most controversial amongst politicians, the public and even other animal rights organizations is PETA’s refusal to condemn the actions of the Animal Liberation Front, which in January 2005 was named as a terrorist threat by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

David Shankbone attended the pre-release screening of I Am An Animal at HBO’s offices in New York City on November 12, and the following day he sat down with Ingrid Newkirk to discuss her perspectives on PETA, animal rights, her responses to criticism lodged against her and to discuss her on-going life’s work to raise human awareness of animal suffering. Below is her interview.

Ghouta, Syria: People presenting with chemical attack symptoms

    Monday, February 26, 2018

Over the weekend, neutral medical facilities in Ghouta, Syria admitted patients presenting with symptoms indicative of a chlorine chemical attack. How the chemical gas entered the Ghouta battlefield is unknown with several nations, rebel forces, and terror groups operating in the region.

Since intelligence has not definitively determined the group responsible for this weekend’s chlorine attack, no punitive actions have been taken. The number of casualties is still being developed as responders gain access to the dispersal site. United Nations (UN) investigators report intercepting 40 packages from North Korea with supplies capable of producing chemical or biological weapons between 2013 and 2017. UN investigators confirm suspected Syrian production facilities have North Korean scientists and engineers deployed.

The Geneva Convention prohibit the use of chemical or biological weapons and the use is considered a War Crime. During April 2017, the Syrian military was accused of dropping the neurotoxin sarin on civilian populations. Sarin is created and stored as a liquid but becomes a gas when exposed to air.

Following the April 2017 sarin attack, the United States launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles targeting Shayrat Airbase where the sarin-laden aircraft was launched. All 59 missiles hit the base within 5 minutes with minimal damage. The Tomahawk attack was an extension of President Barack Obama’s ‘line in the sand’ policy towards Syria’s chemical and biological weapons capability.

Like sarin, chlorine gas enters through the lungs and skin with extremely low concentrations complicating emergency response, first responders requiring fully contained bio-hazardous protective equipment. Top level biohazard suits are expensive, have time consuming suit up procedures, and cumbersome to operate in. Without the protective equipment, emergency personnel could become exposed, diminishing their response capacity.

Mild-exposure will cause irritated skin and coughing progressing to rashes with labored breathing. Extensive exposure symptoms present as 2nd or 3rd degree skin burns, often described as blistering then melting away, respiratory hemorrhaging, seizures, and comas. Chlorine has an affinity for calcium found in bone pushing the chemical deeper into the body.

Treatment of any biological or chemical exposure, including sarin and chlorine gas, is immediately washing the patient with water, aid breathing, and managing pain. Before admittance a chemical or biological weapons patient must undergo extensive decontamination with washing and scrubbing preventing hospital contamination.

    Paper Bags Packaging

    Paper Bags packaging

    by

    Vic Brain

We require some type of packaging to pack any product. There are so many options available like paper bags, plastic bags, cotton bags, tote bags, plastic woven bags etc

Since the customer has realized about saving of environment there is going on increasing demand on biodegradable, compostable and eco friendly packaging products. There is lots of option available in these types of packaging. Now a day s consumer is also ready to pay more if there is option of eco friendly packaging options.

Many supermarkets and super stores or even small grocery stores has two types of shopping bags available one is paper bags and second plastic bags. Plastic bags is little cheaper. After shopping consumer has to take a big bag and has to select either paper bags or plastic bags. But most of consumers select paper bags and pay premium.

Now let us talk on how the paper is manufactured. Main input in paper manufacturing is wood pulp. To manufacture wood pulp we need wood so we have to chop trees for pulp. More and more trees are chopped to manufacture paper. According to me if customers eliminate plastic use and use 100% paper than in 10 years all the forest is chopped off. So local government should make some policy on every 10 tree is cut the paper company has to plant 50 trees. So by doing this ecological balance is done perfectly.

Now second most important ingredient used to manufacture paper is water. To manufacture 10 kilo paper there is requirement of 50 liters of water and this is too too much. Water is very important to everyone in this earth. One cannot ruin water like this. So according to me there should be some machines developed that convert s sea water into fresh water and then utilized by paper bag manufacturing companies. Or there should some latest invention in technology in paper manufacturing which saves water or no water is used.

Paper bags come with white paper bags and brown paper bags. Some of the food manufacturers want attractive printing in their paper bags so now paper bags are available with four color printing or customized printing. If there is requirement of barrier in paper than metalized foil coated paper is available so if the product is packed in foil paper bags than shelf life of product packed is increased and product stays fresh for longer period.

Now there is even further demand of resealable packaging in paper bags so there are some manufacturers who has ability to custom print paper bags and then has resealable ziplock on top of the packaging. And in some case there is tin tie paper bags is the second option than ziplock closures.

According to me there is no alternative of plastic because of many reasons stated above, paper is on the other alternative but It cannot replace plastic.

    Leaked cables cause Australian concern

    Friday, December 10, 2010

Leaked diplomatic cables between Australia and the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, have raised controversy in the Australian community. The documents were released by the whistle-blowing website Wikileaks. The cables between the then prime minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd, and the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, revealed that China may need to be forced to integrate into the international community. The secret documents also contained information of a conversation between Clinton and Rudd in Washington. In the interview, Rudd stated that China was “paranoid” about Taiwan and Tibet.

The sensitive documents may place a strain on diplomatic relations between Australia and China. Despite this, Kevin Rudd reassured the public that the “robust” relationship between Australia and China wouldn’t sustain any substantial damage to the relations between the two countries. At this stage, Prime Minister Julia Gillard has provided no further comment on the matter, other than to ensure that the relationship between China and Australia would allow opinions to be expressed without any threat to either side.

At the heart of the leaks is Australian founder, Julian Assange. Wikileaks have now released 821 of their promised 251,287 US diplomatic cables. The cables are being released on a stage-by-stage basis. Earlier this week, Assange was arrested on suspicion of rape in London under a Swedish arrest warrant placed on him from a court in Stockholm on November 18.

Apple announces Mac OS X Lion, iOS 5, and iCloud

    Tuesday, June 7, 2011

At the company’s own Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote at the Moscone West center in San Francisco, Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the next generation of software products from Apple. Apple unveiled Lion, the new version of their Mac OS X operating system for desktop and laptop computers that brings new features to the software. They also demonstrated iOS 5, a new version of the operating system that powers iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads. Alongside both announcements, Jobs also announced a new iCloud service to sync data among all devices. All 5,200 participating developers will spend the rest of the week in workshops with Apple employees; developer releases of each product were made available today.

Mac OS X Lion will be shipped in July through the online Mac App Store available on Mac computers for US$29. According to Apple, the update adds over 250 new features to the OS. Employee Phil Schiller discussed new multitouch gestures along with a dynamic task manager named Mission Control that shows open applications. During the keynote, Schiller said, “The Mac has outpaced the PC industry every quarter for five years running and with OS X Lion we plan to keep extending our lead.” It also adds full support for the Mac port of the popular App Store, full screen applications, iOS-style app icon lists called Launchpad, and other iOS-like features including a revamped Mail and Auto Save among others. Mac OS X Lion was announced at a different Apple event several months ago and will replace Mac OS X Snow Leopard, which was released in 2009.

Soon after, the company also introduced the latest installment in its popular mobile operating system iOS. The fifth version (iOS 5) introduces around 200 new features, including a revamped notification system, which combines messages and notifications from all applications installed on the user’s device. Scott Forestall, an Apple employee, also revealed that iOS devices would no longer require a computer for setup, allowing users to ‘cut the cord’ between their devices and PCs. Magazines and newspapers also have a new folder interface; the Twitter social network is now integrated significantly into iOS devices. Improvements to the mobile Safari browser were also announced; tabbed browsing and a Reader feature introduce desktop-like functionality. Finally, new camera features are built in, including the ability to take snapshots from the lock screen, as well as iMessages, a new messaging platform for iPhones and iPads.

We are going to demote the PC to just be a device. We are going to move the digital hub, the center of your digital life, into the cloud.

CEO Steve Jobs returned to the stage to reveal Apple’s new cloud services offering, iCloud. The service integrates with Lion and iOS applications and syncs data between a user’s iOS devices. For example, calendar events created on a user’s laptop would be sent to their iPhone through iCloud. Apps, books, documents, photos, and more purchased or created on one device will be shared with others. The service is intended to launch in the fall of 2011 alongside iOS 5 and will be available with 5 gigabytes (GB) of storage for 10 devices for free. Earlier this year, Apple opened a 500,000 square foot data center in North Carolina intended to facilitate this new service. Jobs rounded the services off by unveiling a new iTunes feature that mirrors a user’s library in the cloud, allowing them to listen and download music to authorized devices. “We are going to demote the PC to just be a device. We are going to move the digital hub, the center of your digital life, into the cloud,” said Steve Jobs during the keynote. iCloud and iOS 5 will be released in the fall of 2011; Apple announced no new hardware products.
