Predictable random number generator discovered in the Debian version of OpenSSL

Friday, May 16, 2008

A major security hole was discovered in the pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) of the Debian version of OpenSSL. OpenSSL is one of the most used cryptographic software, that allows the creation of secure network connections with the protocols called SSL and TLS. It is included in many popular computer programs, like the Mozilla Firefox web browser and the Apache web server. Debian is one of the most used GNU/Linux distributions, on which are based other distributions, like Ubuntu and Knoppix. The problem affects all the Debian-based distributions that were used to create cryptographic keys since the September 17, 2006. The bug was discovered by Luciano Bello, an argentine Debian package maintainer, and was announced on May 13, 2008.

This vulnerability was caused by the removal of two lines of code from the original version of the OpenSSL library. These lines were used to gather some entropy data by the library, needed to seed the PRNG used to create private keys, on which the secure connections are based. Without this entropy, the only dynamic data used was the PID of the software. Under Linux the PID can be a number between 1 and 32,768, that is a too small range of values if used to seed the PRNG and will cause the generation of predictable numbers. Therefore any key generated can be predictable, with only 32,767 possible keys for a given architecture and key length, and the secrecy of the network connections created with those keys is fully compromised.

These lines were removed as “suggested” by two audit tools (Valgrind and Purify) used to find vulnerabilities in the software distributed by Debian. These tools warned the Debian maintainers that some data was used before its initialization, that normally can lead to a security bug, but this time it was not the case, as the OpenSSL developers wrote on March 13, 2003. Anyway this change was erroneously applied on September 17, 2006, when the OpenSSL Debian version 0.9.8c-1 was released to the public.

Even though the Debian maintainer responsible for this software released a patch to fix this bug on May 8, 2008, the impact may be severe. In fact OpenSSL is commonly used in software to protect the passwords, to offer privacy and security. Any private key created with this version of OpenSSL is weak and must be replaced, included the session keys that are created and used only temporary. This means that any data encrypted with these keys can be decrypted without a big deal, even if these keys are used (but not created) with a version of the library not affected, like the ones included in other operating systems.

For example any web server running under any operating system may use a weak key created on a vulnerable Debian-based system. Any encrypted connection (HTTPS) to this web server established by any browser can be decrypted. This may be a serious problem for sites that requires a secure connection, like banks or private web sites. Also, if some encrypted connection was recorded in the past, it can be decrypted in the same way.

Another serious problem is for the network security software, like OpenSSH and OpenVPN, that are used to encrypt the traffic to protect passwords and grant the access to an administrative console or a private network protected by firewalls. This may allows hackers to gain unwanted access to private computers, networks or data traveled over the network, even if a not affected version of OpenSSL was used.

The same behavior can be applied to any software or protocol that use SSL, like POP3S, SSMTP, FTPS, if used with a weak key. This is the case of Tor, software used to offer strong anonymity on the TCP/IP, where about 300 of 1,500-2,000 nodes used a weak key. With 15-20% of weak Tor nodes, there is a probability of 0.34-0.8% circa to build a circuit that has all tree nodes weak, resulting in a full loss of anonymity. Also the case of only one weak node begin used may facilitate some types of attack to the anonymity. The Tor hidden services, a sort of anonymous public servers, are affected too. However the issue was speedly addressed on May 14, 2008.

The same problem also interested anonymous remailers like Mixmaster and Mixminion, that use OpenSSL to create the remailer keys for the servers and the nym keys for the clients. Although currently there is no official announcement, at least two remailer changed their keys because were weak.

Freedom Debt Relief Reviews Say You Can Count On Them

By Sean A. Kelly

Debt relief agencies offer solutions to all types of debt issues. Robinson had serious issues when debt on his personal loan had piled. He had taken the loan a few years back for an emergency, but had not been regular on his payments. As the interest rates on the loan were very high, the late payments and missed payments had added on the debt. Robinson had taken the loan for a short term commitment, but had not been able to repay the loan. His credit card debt had added on the debt list. All the late and missed payments for the bills on loan and credit card have resulted in negative report on his credit. Robinson was too worried about his debts and was looking for some ways to pay off the debts. He happened to read through the Freedom Debt Relief Reviews which invited him to sign up for a debt reduction program.

The debt settlement program Robinson signed for helped him to get off the debts earlier than he expected. The program had aggressive effect on his unsecured debts. The program helped Robinson move on from his debt burden. The best part of the program was that it demanded fees only after the customer’s debts were settled. The program had no advance fees or upfront fees or monthly fees. The agency consultants hold talks with customers to get optimal solutions for the debt issues. The agency may negotiate with the creditors to lower the balance due. When the agreement is made for the settlement, a new account for the settlement money is activated. The customer needs to make monthly payments to the new account. When the amount is accumulated enough for the settlement, the creditor is paid off. The amount remaining in the account may be taken as fees for the debt resolving process.

The debt settlement programs are opted for the reason that the customer may not have to deal with the negotiations and legal issues. The agency usually takes care of all the negotiations for lower rates, lower monthly payments and for lower balance dues. The experts and consultants of the agency may help by guiding customers with budget making and finance handling. The settlement programs usually settle for a balance amount much lower than the original amount. Sometimes, the interest rates may also be lowered, thereby making monthly payments affordable. Debt settlement is more often opted for than filing for bankruptcy. When a bankruptcy is declared by the customer the creditor tends to incur heavy loss. But, a settlement program when agreed by the creditor may help them get, at the least, a part of the balance amount. Debt settlement is considered better than bankruptcy.

Some debt settlement programs demand high fees for their services. Sometimes, the costs rise up to 15-20 % of the debt owed. Signing for a debt settlement program may have adverse effect on the credit scores. If the credit scores are fairly good, other debt relief options like debt consolidation loan can be opted for, as these programs may not have a negative effect on credit report. But, taking debt settlement programs may have negative effect on credit reports. The negative scores may stay for a longer time on the credit reports. Still, settlement programs are mostly prefered to bankruptcy, as filing for bankruptcy may have negative points on credit reports that may stay for ten or more years.

Woman arrested after caught living in man’s closet

Saturday, May 31, 2008

In the town of Kasuya, Fukuoka, Japan, a 58-year-old woman was arrested after surveillance tape from inside an unnamed man’s home showed her living in his closet.

According to police, Tatsuko Horikawa had been living in his closet for over one year. One day when the man left, she walked through his front door which had been left unlocked. From then on, she would take small amounts of food from the kitchen and even take showers. When the man noticed food missing, he set up cameras to catch what he thought was someone robbing him.

The woman had placed a small bed mattress into a enclosed shelf area inside the closet to sleep on and when police searched the apartment, they found her curled up in the closet.

“We searched the house … checking everywhere someone could possibly hide. When we slid open the shelf closet, there she was, nervously curled up on her side,” said Hiroki Itakura, a police spokesman.

The woman, who was described by police as “neat and clean”, will be charged with trespassing.

Japanese national team beats ACT softball team

Monday, March 19, 2012

Hawker, Australian Capital Territory — Tonight, the Japanese national team beat the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) softball team 1–0 in the first of a two game series before Japan plays a three game test series against the Australian national team.

The game was a low scoring pitching duel. Japan brought five pitchers to Canberra for their Australian tour. Since the last Olympics, Japan has been in a rebuilding period. The side is young and many of their best players have not had much international experience. One of their best pitchers is only nineteen years old.

The ACT side included Australian national team members Aimee Murch and Clare Warwick; Olympic bronze medalist Brenda De Blaes; Victorian state team representative, national team member and Olympic bronze medalist Justine Smethurst; and Clare Currie, who narrowly missed the cut for the national team.

De Blaes started the top of the first with a hit. She ended the inning stranded on base. Murch was pitching for the ACT to start the bottom of the first. Number 15 for Japan opened the inning with a single, and was advanced to third on another single. She was tagged out after trying to score a run after her teammate hit a pop up caught by the ACT’s centre fielder. Number 6 hit a double during this inning, scoring Japan’s only run.

The top of the second saw ACT players 1, 5 and 3 tagged out after hits to the infield. The bottom of the second saw number 13 out on a foul ball caught on the fly by the ACT’s third baseman, and number 11 and 24 out on balls hit into and caught by the ACT’s centre fielder.

The top of third inning saw numbers 24 and 21 ground out. De Blaes ended the inning by striking out. The bottom of the third saw Japan’s first batter ground out, number 8 getting a single on an infield hit, another playing getting an out, and the inning ending with number 11 hitting an infield ground out.

The rest of the game followed much the same pattern. Two players, an ACT player and a Japanese, were struck by balls and required trainers to look at them. Smethurst came in and pitched a few innings in relief. Between the fifth and sixth innings, there was a small delay in the game when a dog named Streaker, owned by Australia men’s national softball team player Adam Folkard, ran onto the the infield.

The game ended 1–0. An announcement was made at the end of the game that the match scheduled for tomorrow would start fifteen minutes earlier than the advertised start time of 18:00.

When Diabetes Comes Knocking What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Diabetes

When Diabetes Comes Knocking – What are the Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes

by

Jeffrey Dale I don’t think anyone intentionally waits by the door for the “postman” to come knocking with some bad news. That’s unless you’re either a fortune teller making a bet, or nuts. Which is what I thought of my mother for a long time. In her opinion, she knows when the world is going to end! And true to her words, as she persistently put it to my carefree brother, “you are better off without all that sugar, you will get diabetes for sure.” My brother was well known for his love affair with sugary things and zero exercise. He would often take copious amounts of soda, stuff his face with. In a nutshell, a cookie monster with the t.v remote as his bosom buddy. He became a borderline obese for starters. Then he started exhibiting symptoms such as fatigue, constant thirst and urinating and it was off to the doctors. He was told that he was a prediabetes, which means that your sugar levels are high, but not to the diabetes level. It can be managed and often, reversed. He was advised to make some major changes in his lifestyle. And, no, he did not and now he is now a full blown diabetic! What is Diabetes? This is a disease that impairs your body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin (which is very important as it basically helps the body convert the sugars in food, into energy) this results in high levels of glucose in the blood and urine and an abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates. Now, there is currently no known cure for diabetes and trust me, it’s either you lead a healthy lifestyle or unlike my brother, an early diagnosis can save you a lifetime of hassle.Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes (Type 1 and 2)You need to understand that with type 1 diabetes, the symptoms are often sudden and quick to diagnose, unlike the sneaky type 2 diabetes, which often goes unnoticed for years, even much later in old age. You will experience a lot of weight gain with type 2 diabetes as the extra fat, especially around the belly, causes a resistance to insulin. So if you suspect that you are a diabetic, be on the lookout for the following symptoms:1.The most common one is being unusually thirsty.2.Extreme fatigue.3.Passing more urine.4.Feeling hungry and weight gain.5.Having skin infections and cuts that won’t heal as quickly as they should.6.Mood swings.7.Constant headaches and dizziness.8.Muscle cramps. While I insist on a healthy lifestyle, such as:*Daily exercising – walking as much as you can, use the stairs instead of the lift.*Healthy diet – cut down on the sugar, salt, bad fats, and excessive consumption of alcoholic drinks.Consider too that genes and family history can also increase your risks of developing diabetes in the future. So I reckon, it is about time that you did some research on that basis. Do not panic if you are predisposed. Prevention is always better than cure. Now you know!

Jeffrey Dale is a Type 2 Diabetic and asks the questions, “Can you be a Type 2 Diabetic and poke fun at the disease, or will it get mad at you if you do”? He shares everything he’s learned – the hard way – as an “expert” on his blog at

Bombing of Peshawar Pearl Continental Hotel in Pakistan kills 18

Thursday, June 11, 2009

Militants in Pakistan launched a truck bomb attack on the Peshawar Pearl Continental hotel, killing 18 and wounding at least 55. Among the dead were two foreign United Nations officials working for the World Food Programme.

According to the BBC, Fidayeen-e-Islam, a relatively obscure Pakistani militant group, claimed responsibility for the blast. The attack follows a threat from the Taliban made on May 27, warning of “major attacks” in Pakistan.

The bombing occurred despite the property being heavily guarded and secure. The militants gained entrance by overcoming the guards with gunfire, and forcing a bomb-laden truck, containing at least 500 kilograms of explosives, through the gates. Police official Liaqat Ali told the Associated Press that the militants “drove the vehicle inside the hotel gates and blew it up on reaching close to the hotel building.”

The bomb caused a 15-foot wide crater, and brought down the west wing of the hotel. An injured guest, Jawad Chaudhry, said, “The floor under my feet shook. I thought the roof was falling on me. I ran out. I saw everybody running in panic. There was blood and pieces of glass everywhere.”

The hotel is regularly used by businessmen and diplomats, and is located in a secure area of the city. Neighbours include the Peshawar High Court, Provincial Assembly and the official home of the Commander of the Frontier Corps. The perceived security of the neighbourhood makes it a candidate for the location of a planned United States consulate.

A couple living in New York City have decided to take a taxi all the way to Arizona. Betty and Bob Matas are retiring and leaving the city for good. What started as joke, has become reality, in part to spare their cats from traveling in a jetliner cargo-hold. They have negotiated a US$3,000 flat fee instead of the metered rate, which was estimated at US$5,000.

A vocational nurse working for Dr. John Capriotti, a plastic surgeon, was accused of setting the fire that wounded several and killed three people in Houston, Texas on March 28. She was allegedly trying to cover up the fact that she hadn’t completed the paperwork for an upcoming audit.

The fire began in Dr. Capriotti’s office on the fifth floor and quickly spread to the sixth. Arson investigators from the Houston Fire Department, the FBI and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had been working to determine the source of the fire.

Iran announced that it has started industrial scale production of nuclear fuel involving hundreds of centrifuges. The announcement comes as President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reasserts his nation’s nuclear rights in the face of two rounds of sanctions by the UN Security Council, which is seeking a halt to such work.

The United States denounced the declaration, saying it showed Iran was defying the international community.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.

Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.

In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”

An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.

Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.

Australian government considers controlling fuel supplies

Monday, June 16, 2008

The gas crisis in Western Australia continues to deepen with more businesses standing people down without pay. Businesses have been instructed to turn off non-essential items including limiting the number of lifts and reduced lighting; domestic customers are also urged to reduce energy use.

In the Federal parliament today Resources Minister Martin Ferguson raised the prospect of activating the Liquid Fuel Emergency Act. “During such a situation, I can control the production, transfer and stock levels of crude and liquid fuel…While I sincerely hope that this will not be required, the Liquid Fuel Emergency Act provides authority for the Australian Government to prepare for and manage a national liquid fuel supply emergency,” he said.

Western Australian Premier Alan Carpenter called on all Western Australians to reduce energy usage, saying that the situation could be managed with on going co-operation, while reassuring everyone that the crisis will be short, with the Apache Corporation expected to begin partial operations in two months. Supplies were interrupted after a fire at Apache’s Vanarus Island refinery, which supplied 30% of the state’s natural gas requirements.

An Alinta spokesman has said that with the expected cold weather during the next week demand will put further pressure on supplies, advising that it is critical that all consumers limit energy usage.

Alinta requests that residential customers;
