Winning British EuroMillions lottery ticket worth £56 million claimed

Sunday, February 14, 2010

A winning British EuroMillions lottery ticket, worth approximately £56,008,113 (US$87,893,534, 64,565,882), has been claimed. The value of the prize breaks the record for the largest amount of money won in a lottery in the United Kingdom. The previous record, which was approximately £45 million (US$70.5 million, €52 million), was claimed in November 2009. That amount was given to both of the two lottery ticket winners of the draw, both of which happened to live in the United Kingdom.

The £56 million win, which occurred as a result of the EuroMillions lottery draw on Friday, was actually a share of the jackpot total of approximately £113 million (US$177 million, €130 million). The prize was shared between the UK winner and another winning ticket holder in Spain. At present, neither of the two winners have been publicly identified.

We have got the champagne ready and we’re just waiting for the lucky winner to come forward.

A spokesperson for the Camelot Group, who runs the EuroMillions lottery in the United Kingdom, said: “We have got the champagne ready and we’re just waiting for the lucky winner to come forward. It’s the biggest win that we have ever had in this country and whoever it is, wherever they are, their life is about to change dramatically. Subject to validation, the prize could be paid out when the banks open on Monday.”

The EuroMillions lottery draw takes place in nine European countries including the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland. The biggest ever prize given out in the EuroMillions draw overall was approximately £113.2 million (US$177.7 million, €130.5 million). The prize was given to a solitary winner in Spain in May 2009.

Sulpicio Lines asks court to stop BMI investigation into ‘Princess of the Stars’ disaster

Monday, July 7, 2008

The Philippine shipping company Sulpicio Lines has asked a court to issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) stopping the Board of Marine Inquiry (BMI) from proceeding with its investigation into the loss of MV Princess of the Stars. The passenger ferry capsised and sank off Sibuyan island on June 21 during Typhoon Fengshen (known locally as Typhhon Frank) with hundreds of casualties.

Sulpicio told the Manila Regional Trial Court that both Republic Act 9295 and the Domestic Shipping Development Act of 2004 removed the BMI’s power to investigate maritime incidents and that the investigation the board launched on June 25 is “irregular, illegal, and null and void”. They say only the Maritime Industry Authority is allowed to investigate accidents at sea.

Sulpicio also described the investigation as an ‘inquisition’ that was biased against Sulpicio from the start. They say “prejudgment” has increased the “pervasive negative publicity” surrounding the line, since negative accusations are most often published in newspapers. The company says one comment the board made was “Your vessel is not stable!” “You have no business being a safety officer!”

As a result Sulpicio is seeking ?650,000 from the BMI. This is split down as ?500,000 in moral damages, ?100,000 lawyer’s fees and ?50,000 further costs.

The House Committee on Transportation also launched its own inquiry into the disaster today. The case for the TRO will be heard tomorrow.

Academy Award-winning film director Paul Haggis leaves Scientology

Academy Award-winning film director Paul Haggis leaves Scientology

Monday, October 26, 2009

Academy Award-winning film director Paul Haggis declared to Scientology spokesman Tommy Davis that he had decided to leave the Church of Scientology after being a member for 35 years. His letter to Davis was posted Saturday on the blog of former high-ranking Scientology official Marty Rathbun. Haggis received Academy Awards for writing and producing the 2004 film Crash, which he also directed.

Rathbun confirmed the authenticity of the letter by Haggis, and The Hollywood Reporter also confirmed it with a friend of the director. At his blog, Rathbun has been critical of Scientology’s current leader David Miscavige. In the June article “Former Scientology executives say leader David Miscavige abused staff”, Wikinews reported on criticism by Rathbun and other high-ranking officials that was published in a series of investigative articles in the St. Petersburg Times. In his letter to Davis, Haggis wrote that he read the series in the St. Petersburg Times, where these former Scientology officials accused David Miscavige of physically abusing Scientologists. He criticized the manner in which the Church of Scientology attempted to smear the former officials after they spoke out against the organization.

Well-known celebrity Scientologists include actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta. Haggis had not been known to be a vocal public supporter of Scientology prior to his declaration to Davis that he was leaving the organization.

He expressed his disappointment to Davis, son of actress Anne Archer, that the San Diego, California branch of the Church of Scientology supported Proposition 8. Proposition 8 removed the rights of same-sex couples to marry in California. The San Diego Church of Scientology was listed along with other groups on a Proposition 8 supporters website, but it was later removed. Haggis said that Davis initially told him he would do something about the San Diego Church of Scientology’s support for Proposition 8, but in the end Davis did not take action about this. Haggis called the inaction by Davis with regard to the San Diego Church of Scientology’s stance on homosexuality “cowardly”. Scientology views of homosexuality are controversial, and the introductory work to the topic Dianetics by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard describes homosexuality as a form of sexual perversion. Haggis wrote to Davis that he did not wish to stay a member “of an organization where gay-bashing was tolerated”, and called such behavior “indefensible”.

Actress Deborah Rennard, wife of Haggis, was introduced to Scientology by her parents. According to Haggis, the Scientology practice of “disconnection” was imposed on Rennard and her husband, and they were ordered to disconnect from her parents because Rennard’s parents had violated a rule of the organization. Due to having undergone a personal experience with regard to Scientology’s practice of disconnection, Haggis was surprised to hear Davis deny the policy existed in an interview with CNN journalist John Roberts.

I am only ashamed that I waited this many months to act. I hereby resign my membership in the Church of Scientology.

He concluded his letter to Davis by noting that his Scientologist friends might disassociate from him due to his words, writing, “…I am fully aware that some of my friends may choose to no longer associate with me, or in some cases work with me. I will always take their calls, as I always took yours. However, I have finally come to the conclusion that I can no longer be a part of this group. Frankly, I had to look no further than your refusal to denounce the church’s anti-gay stance, and the indefensible actions, and inactions, of those who condone this behavior within the organization. I am only ashamed that I waited this many months to act. I hereby resign my membership in the Church of Scientology.”

Haggis has taken an enormous step here, and one that should resonate among all celebrity Scientologists.

Roger Friedman of The Hollywood Reporter described the film director’s decision to leave the Church of Scientology as “a stunning move”. Friedman wrote that “Haggis has taken an enormous step here, and one that should resonate among all celebrity Scientologists.” Tony Ortega of The Village Voice called Haggis’s declaration to Davis “a remarkable letter”, and Gina Serpe of E! Online wrote “True, he was nowhere near the religion’s most famous celebrity practitioner, but he will no doubt now go down as one of its most infamous, thanks to the inevitably viral publication of his resignation letter”. Writing for Movieline, Kyle Buchanan characterized the letter by Haggis as “a candid, confrontational letter to Scientology top brass”, and said “It’s a must-read.” Radar Online observed “In a shock heard-round-the-Scientology world, Paul Haggis has very publicly quit the organization.” Foster Kamer wrote for Gawker that the letter by Haggis was “incredibly damning” to Scientology, and Adam McDowell of National Post called it “a scathing letter about church policy”. Vicki Hyman of The Star-Ledger called Haggis “the most famous name (if not face) to renounce the Church of Scientology”, and Xan Brooks wrote in The Guardian that “the Church of Scientology lost one of its most high-profile members”. According to The Guardian, the Church of Scientology has not yet responded publicly to the statements made by Haggis in his letter to Davis.

Haggis has multiple credits in film, including work as writer-director for Crash, and writer for Million Dollar Baby (directed by Clint Eastwood), Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, and Letters From Iwo Jima. Both Million Dollar Baby (2004) and Crash (2005) won Academy Awards for Best Picture, making Haggis the first film writer since 1950 to pen movies which won Best Picture Oscars in consecutive years. He is highly-regarded for his work as a humanitarian and for his civil liberties work, and his letter includes a list of awards he has received related to his dedication to civil rights. He is currently working on the film The Next Three Days, which includes actors Liam Neeson, Russell Crowe, and former Scientologist Jason Beghe. Beghe previously went public with his own criticism after leaving the Church of Scientology, and described how members must pay large amounts of money to advance in Scientology levels.

Do You Want Energy Saving Windows? Learn The Basics From A Reputable Roofing Contractor In Orland Park

byAlma Abell

There is a need for all homeowners to learn more about energy saving windows. Besides their beauty, a host of technology enhanced features hve been incorporated into their construction. A Roofing Contractor in Orland Park explains some of the ways that make these windows more efficient.

Edge spacers

The edge spacer is one of the most inefficient aspects of old windows. The Spacer is that material that holds the panes of glass apart. Over the years, aluminum has been the most widely used material. However, the new technology allows the use of other materials that conduct heat and cold more efficiently than aluminum. To enhance window efficiency, edge spacers are now made from insulated steel, silicone foam, or butyl rubber.

Tinted glass

To avoid heating up a room, the roofer recommends the use of tinted glass for all commercial properties. Several years back, tinted glass was not suitable for residential homes, as it made the rooms too dark. However, new technology allows the construction of lighter and less noticeable tinting that is a real energy saver in warm climates.

Glazing

Glazing involves the use of multiple panes of glass in a window in order to create a thermal barrier between the climates outside and inside your house. The energy saving window becomes more efficient every time you increase the space between the panes of glass.

Low e-coating

E-coating lets in light, but keeps radiant heat in. For you to get the best grade for your windows, contact a window replacement expert and roofer to get the best energy efficient window for your climate.

Glass fill

This involves filling the space between the glass panes with a special material that is less conductive. Argon gas is one of the most used fills, as it increases the energy saving properties of your windows.

Economical and environmental aspects.

It is important to note that the use of energy efficient windows is a good way of creating more energy efficient living spaces. This allows you to save more money in the long run as well as take part in conserving the environment.

To take full advantage of energy efficient windows, contact a window installer or a roofer about choosing the right window. An experienced Roofing Contractor in Orland Park will recommend the best window options for your home and climate condition. You can read the full info here.

Ryanair profits jump 19% to €268.9m

Tuesday, May 31, 2005

Ryanair, the Irish low fares airline, which last week celebrated twenty years in business, has reported a 19% increase in profits. The airline, which operates over 200 routes, revealed in its annual results that after tax profits had increased to €268.9m (US $332 million), comfortably beating the median analyst forecast of €248m ($306 million).

Group revenue rose by 24% to a record €1.34bn ($1.66 billion), on the back of a 19% rise in passenger numbers to 27.6m ($34.1 million). By 10:30am UTC, Ryanair shares had risen by 4.48% to €6.53 ($8.06) ( on the Irish Stock Exchange (ISE), having hit €6.66 ($8.22) earlier in the morning – briefly valuing Ryanair above the €5bn ($6 billion) mark.

Despite the increase in profits, the firm told investors that the increased cost of fuel posed a serious threat for the future, however Ryanair has hedged 75% of next winters fuel needs at €38 ($47) a barrel. CEO Michael O’Leary, told the media in relation to fuel costs, “Our outlook for the coming 12 months is more positive than it was this time last year”…”Clearly fuel costs remain high, and the market is volatile.” He also reiterated that Ryanair would not impose fuel surcharges on customers.

Ryanair’s 2004 record profit is larger than that of Easyjet ($74m), British Airways ($240m), and even its role model Southwest Airlines ($313m). The fact that it made €248m on turnover of just €1.34bn makes it by some margin the world’s most profitable major airline. One of the key methods of keeping costs to a minimum at Ryanair is by using less staff to carry more passengers, in comparison to its main competitors:

Ryanair has a stated aim of raising its passenger numbers to above 70m within five years time, making it Europe’s largest airline. The Dublin-based airline currently is awaiting delivery of 200 new planes from Boeing which it hopes to use to achieve this ambitious aim and to replace its older aircraft.

Fifteen killed by US drone strikes in Northern Waziristan

Monday, January 3, 2011

Pakistani officials have stated that three US drone strikes have killed fifteen people in the country Saturday. The attacks occurred to the north of Miranshah town in the North Waziristan region.

Security officials in the town informed AFP that in the first strike, US drones fired four missiles on a car, killing seven suspected militants. A nearby “militant compound” was also destroyed by the missiles. “Three militants were killed in the car while four were killed in the house,” the official said. The second attack occurred within minutes of the first, and four militants, who were carrying on rescue work were killed by the two missiles that had been fired.

Intelligence officials believe that the militants were associated with Hafiz Gul Bahadur. “We are trying to establish identity of the militants but most of them are believed to be fighters of Hafiz Gul Bahadur,” an official told the media. However, the death toll and the identity of those killed was not officially confirmed. A local official stated that they had heard reports stating “that four foreigners were also killed in these fresh attacks”. However, he added that their identity is “still not known” and mentioned that they “are collecting more information.”

Sleep Apnea Remedies That Can Save Your Life

By Alexes Lebeau

Happy When Your Husband Has Snoring Breaks?

Most wives complain about their spouses snoring. It sometimes comes to the point that they go separate rooms just for the sake of peace. Some wives are relieved when there are long pauses between the loud snoring. Instead of being relieved, wives must be concerned. Their partners may have sleep apnea. Remedies must be immediately applied to prevent serious consequences.

Check out immediately if your husband has other symptoms like personality changes, headaches in the morning, perspiring during sleep, and even sexual problems. If he also gained much weight recently, be concerned. These symptoms are but not always associated with sleep apnea.

Get Medical Attention ASAP

In monitoring your husband sleeping pattern, time the gaps in-between the snoring and record your observations. This will be a useful reference when you take your husband for a medical consultation. In the meantime, you can look up sleep apnea remedies online, but still it is best to see a doctor as soon as possible.

The doctor will conduct further tests to determine the underlying causes of your husbands sleeping disorder. It could be that he also has high blood pressure and heartburn. If the disorder goes unchecked, your partner will be susceptible to heart attacks or strokes. The doctor will recommend sleep apnea remedies, which will eliminate the problem.

Your doctor will explain that your husband has obstructive sleep apnea. His condition will increase levels of the NO or gas nitric acid, which will in turn prompt the blood vessels to expand. The increased amounts of angiotensin will also contribute to fatal heart diseases or heart attack.

To diagnose if he has sleep apnea the doctor will check your husbands soft palate, tonsils and upper airways. He will also asses the upper body obesity and measure his neck. He will also ask if your husband suffer episodes of heartburn, and inquire about his sleeping position. He will also interview you about your husbands snoring and his gasping for breath.

Sleep Apnea Remedies

Sleep apnea remedies range from the simple to complex. If your husband sleeps mostly on his back, let him sleep on his side. This will prevent the blockage of the airways.

Encourage your husband to refrain from smoking and imbibing alcohol. If he has allergies, remove all the allergens in the house. It could be dust or pet hair. Vacuum the house regularly, and let your pet stay outside. Have filtration units installed in the rooms.

Another of the tested sleep apnea remedies is helping your husband lose weight. Give him more vegetables and fruits. Be strict about this, and dont give him those second helpings.

If these wont work, the doctor will advice the use of the CPAP or the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure device. This may not be the miracle cure but this oral device will give your husband better sleep. He will get continuous amount of air from the device, and this will deter the collapse of the throat muscles during sleep.

If the condition of your husband is severe, the doctor may prescribe the use of a Bi-level or Bi-PAP machine. Unlike the CPAP, this device will release two different air pressures. Increased air pressure is released when your husband inhales and decreases when he exhales. If the oral device causes a lot of discomfort, your husband can opt for surgery.

If your husband is snoring loudly and bothering your sleep, better be concerned than angry. Discuss the problem with him and assess the different sleep apnea remedies that you can apply.

Six-year-old boy on vacation in Venezuela dies in plane crash

Sunday, April 19, 2009

Six-year-old Thomas David Horne from the United Kingdom has died and eleven other British tourists were injured Friday when their plane crashed in Canaima National Park in Venezuela. They were on a sight seeing tour of the world’s tallest waterfalls, the Angel Falls.

The single engine, nine-seater Cessna 208 Caravan, lifted off shortly before the end of the runway, lost power, and then surged briefly before plummeting into the Venezuelan jungle in front of the 3,200 ft falls.

“It started to take off and we sensed it was losing power. Then it seemed to get it back and lifted off just 200 metres before the end of the runway. Then it dived into the trees,” reported Makeli Freire, a park tour guide.

Three of the injured sustained serious injuries, while the others suffered mainly broken bones. Thomas Horne, who sustained serious head injuries, died on the way to a local hospital. The pilot, co-pilot and tour guide were among the injured. Everyone on board was flown to Ciudad Bolívar, the capital city of Venezuela’s Bolívar state, where they were treated for their injuries. Among the injured were Thomas’s mother and father Jane and David who were among those who had broken bones. They were British tourists finishing up a two week holiday to Venezuela.

“The young boy died as he was being flown to hospital. His parents are both physically OK but are completely distraught over the loss of their son,” said Maiker Puga, of the Ciudad Bolivar clinic.

Liz and her husband Keith Grainger and S. Phillips, also British tourists, were also injured in the crash. The names of the three other British tourists and the three person crew who were injured have not been released at this time.

The plane tour was offered by First Choice, a division of TUI Travel PLC who extended their “heartfelt sympathy to family and friends during this deeply sad time.” LTA airline has suspended further flights until the investigation is concluded.

June Holman, Thomas’s aunt who was not on holidays said, that “there is nothing worse than losing a loved one, especially not a young child with their whole life ahead of them. The thoughts of us all are with his parents Jane and Dave at this very sad time.”
