India seeks web crackdown after failed talks with industry

India seeks web crackdown after failed talks with industry

Tuesday, December 6, 2011

Indian authorities today declared an intent to force web companies to screen content for “offensive” and “blasphemous material”. The move follows failed talks yesterday with Facebook, Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft.

Communications Minister Kapil Sibal says “My aim is that insulting material never gets uploaded”, and that web firms “will have to give us the data, where these images are being uploaded and who is doing it.” The government’s planned new policy is in response to web-based firms informing him they could not prevent such material being uploaded. “They have given it to me in writing that they will not do anything until we get an order from the court,” even though “At a meeting on 4 November, we showed them some of the photos and they too agreed that the photos were offensive,” said Sibal. The disputed material was first discussed three months ago.

Sibal calls the situation “unacceptable” and disputes the firms’ defence of being merely “platforms” for others to add material. He claims they showed their “intention was not to cooperate”. Facebook promised ongoing dialogue in a statement and “[recognise] the government’s interest in minimising the amount of abusive content”. They also promised to “remove any content that violates our terms, which are designed to keep material that is hateful, threatening, incites violence or contains nudity off the service.”

Google say they remove material breaching their policies and to comply with local legislation. “But when content is legal and doesn’t violate our policies, we won’t remove it just because it’s controversial, as we believe that people’s differing views, so long as they’re legal, should be respected and protected,” the company added.

“We have to take care of the sensibilities of our people, we have to protect their sensibilities. Our cultural ethos is very important to us,” Sibal said today. A response from web firms of “we throw up our hands, we can’t do anything about this” would not be tolerated.

Although some reports suggest the spat has been triggered by critiques of powerful politician Sonia Gandhi, Sibal claims the firms have previously hesitated to respond to requests for details of “terrorists”. All the material the government wishes to censor is “absolutely illegal, defamatory, pornographic or other similar kind of material” says Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi. Material in question includes cartoons of Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and material mocking religion including an image depicting pigs in Mecca.

Indian computer security expert Vijay Mukhi rubbished the suggestions. “The idea of prescreening is impossible. How will they do it?… There is no technology currently that determines whether content is ‘defamatory’ or ‘offensive’,” he told Reuters. This sentiment was broadly echoed by large numbers on Twitter; the tag #IdiotKapilSibal was among the nation’s Twitter users’ most-used today. Twitter and Facebook were the organising points earlier this year for an anti-graft campaign that saw thousands protesting and new laws passed.

Internet companies insist too much material flows through the web to make such screening plausible. Sibal says the firms are applying US standards which do not take Indian needs into account.

Research in Motion last year resisted Indian security demands for access to encrypted BlackBerry communications. The government gave up that request but did manage to gain limited access to some BlackBerry communications. Skype and Google were told then that local servers would be mandatory, allowing the government to inspect emails.

About 100 million of India’s 1.2 billion people are online. There are 28 million Indian Facebook profiles. Google says it has received 68 content removal requests from Indian officials this year, and there have also been concerns Google Earth could be used to plan militant attacks.

India’s new moves follow criticism of the United Kingdom earlier this year. The UK proposed social media restrictions following riots while the Foreign Secretary simultaneously criticised other nations using social media controls to limit protest.

Toyota recalls up to 1.8 million automobiles

Saturday, January 30, 2010

The automobile manufacturer Toyota has said that it will recall up to 1.8 million cars across Europe, after a problem with the accelerator pedal was discovered.

According to the firm, eight models were affected by the problem — AYGO, iQ, Yaris, Auris, Corolla, Verso, Avensis, and RAV4 — after it was discovered that the accelerator may become stuck in a depressed position, resulting in uncontrollable speeding.

On Thursday, Toyota said it would recall 1.1 million cars in the US; a day previous, it had suspended eight models from sales. Last week, 2.3 million cars in the US were recalled due to the pedal issues.

The chief executive of Toyota Motor Europe commented on the recall. “We understand that the current situation is creating concerns and we deeply regret it,” said Tadashi Arashima. The firm, however, noted that it wasn’t aware of any accidents resulted by the malfunctioning accelerator pedals, and not many pedal problem incidents were reported in Europe. “The potential accelerator pedal issue only occurs in very rare circumstances,” Arashima added.

The National Automobile Dealers Association, meanwhile, commented that Toyota showrooms could lose as much as US$2.47 billion worth of revenue due to the incident.

“Toyota veterans will likely hear the news with disbelief and keep faith in the brand, but new customers could definitely be scared off,” remarked Robert Rademacher, who is the president of the trade group ZDK, as quoted by Business Week. “This recall has a dimension which we’ve never seen before.”

There are concerns that the problem may result in reduced consumer trust in Toyota. Hans-Peter Wodniok, an analyst for Fairesearch GmbH & Co. in Germany, noted: “If this is a one-time event, huge as it is, Toyota may be forgiven. But if something happens again in the next months and years, they will have gambled away customer trust in Europe as well.”

Analysts for Morgan Stanley, however, said they believed Toyota would not suffer much from the incident. “The company’s actions to correct the situation are timely enough to avoid major brand damage,” they remarked in a note to investors.

Holiday Houses For Rent In Toronto Beaches

Holiday Houses For Rent In Toronto Beaches

by

Vikram Kumar

To most people, property is, quite simply, a place on which to build a house and live. For some, property is also a means of investing in the future, through the appreciation of property prices. And for a few, property is also a means of enjoyment, where the property is situated in an attractive location such as the mountains or the beach. One of the best places to have a holiday home is on the waterfront in Toronto, and there are a number of houses for rent in Toronto beaches that you can choose from. To find the right holiday home to rent, you will need the right real estate sales representative one who is as comfortable recommending houses for sale in Bradford as rental homes on the Toronto waterfront.

The typical vacation involves flying to someplace and staying in a hotel while you are there. Hotel stays can be extremely expensive, however, especially when you consider that you are only paying for a single room that is probably not particularly large. In fact, if you calculate the rate on a per-day basis, renting an entire house is often cheaper than staying at a hotel. This is why more and more people are choosing to buy or rent holiday homes for extended vacations, so they can truly enjoy a home away from home.

The Beaches

There are few places in Canada as beautiful or as popular at the Beaches, also known to some simply as The Beach. Situated on the shores of Lake Ontario, the Beaches draw a great many visitors from other parts of Toronto, particularly in the summer months when the weather is warm. People come to walk the boardwalk, shop and dine at the stores and restaurants that line Queen Street, and simply relax by the water.

While you might easily be forgiven for thinking that the Beaches was a resort town on the coast, far from any big city, the neighborhood is in fact a mere 15-minute drive from Toronto s bustling downtown area. The combination of big city convenience coupled with waterfront relaxation makes this the perfect area to have a holiday home or simply to rent one for an extended vacation during the summer.

The area boasts a rich history, having been settled by a family from Philadelphia that moved to Canada in 1793. Until the late 1800s, the area now called the Beaches was farmed by the original family that settled there and a few other families that had later joined them. The history and beauty of the waterfront has been maintained, and there are no waterfront condos or other similar development to mar the beauty of the waterline.

Finding A House

The degree of popularity of the Beaches makes it difficult for buyers or renters to find a house on their own, and you will most probably require the services of a real estate agent to find houses for rent in Toronto Beaches. You should ensure that the real estate agent you hire has extensive experience, and you might want to consider an agent who is affiliated with a realty company. Some realty companies have large presences all across Canada, ranging from houses for sale in Bradford to houses for sale in Toronto.

French Workers stay at home for Whit Monday

French Workers stay at home for Whit Monday

Monday, May 16, 2005

In France, workers by the millions stayed at home during the Whit Monday holiday despite the government’s cancellation of the traditional Pentecost public holiday. Some acted in defiance of the government’s decision, while some took leave or were put on forced leave by their employers due to uncertainties of public transportation.

Following the 2003 heat wave, which caused the deaths of an estimated 13,000 elderly people in France, the administration of prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin has proposed the suppression of one day of public holiday in order to use the supplemental generated tax for a fund for the caring of the elderly.

Whit Monday was selected because, in normal years, France has several public holidays in May. Furthermore, attendance of religious celebrations is low, so holidays of a religious origin are nowadays generally mere family reunions.

However, the reception of this new working day was mixed. The administration says it promotes solidarity with the elderly. Trade unions and opposition groups argue that the measure is an ill-conceived stunt aimed at hiding the government’s bad handling of the problems of the elderly.

For instance, many remember that in 1956, the government created a tax (the vignette) on motor vehicles, allegedly for funding measures for the elderly. But in 1973, the products of this tax came, as any other tax, into the government’s general fund.

With this measure, the French government intends to raise 2 billion to be donated to a new public establishment, the “national fund for solidarity for autonomy.” The new fund would be chartered to deal with losses of self-sufficiency of elderly or handicapped people. 1.2 billion € are earmarked for elderly people, 0.8 for the handicapped.

Trade unions had called for strikes in urban public transportation and paralyzed traffic in 27 cities, including Clermont-Ferrand, Lille, Montpellier ou Strasbourg. However, SNCF (the national railway operator) did not strike and RATP (the Paris transportation authority) suffered only minor disturbances, though both are normally known for their frequent and disturbing strikes.

SNCF considered the day as a holiday for payroll purposes and instead increased the work day by 1’52”, a measure that majority leader Nicolas Sarkozy considered shocking and contrary to the objectives of the government.

The protests are also widely considered to be motivated by the unpopularity of the administration of president Jacques Chirac and prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin. Recent statistics show a five year-high for unemployment at 10.2%.

This discontent may result in a majority of “no” in the vote for the ratification of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe.

NFL star Michael Vick indicted for running dog fighting operation

NFL star Michael Vick indicted for running dog fighting operation

Friday, July 20, 2007

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and three other men were indicted on Tuesday by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiracy related to a dog fighting operation. The charges included buying, breeding and training pit bull dogs, transporting the dogs across state lines to illegally participate in fights, and gambling on the fights.

The indictments stemmed from a search of Vick’s Smithfield, Virginia home in April, in which 54 pit bulls were removed, along with equipment used in dog fighting.

The indictment said that Vick had bought the property in Smithfield for US$34,000 to run the dog fighting under the name “Bad Newz Kennels” with two other people named in the indictment. Purnell Peace, Quanis Phillips, and Tony Taylor were all named in the indictment along with Vick.

The indictment stated that Vick took part in the killing of eight dogs that didn’t pass test fights, called “rolling”. The pit bulls were allegedly killed by hanging, drowning and slamming at least one dog onto the ground.

If convicted of both portions of the conspiracy charge, Vick could face six years in prison and a $350,000 fine. His property, located in Surry County, would be subject to forfeiture under U.S. laws dealing with illegal activities that are carried out at an interstate level. The indictment alleges that the dog fighting operation, involving American Pit Bull Terriers, spilled over into Alabama, North Carolina and New York.

Vick has a court date on July 26 for a bond hearing and to hear the charges. Vick has said that he had a kennel operation on the property, but had no involvement or knowledge of a dog fighting ring.

Cold Weather Car &Amp; Truck Battery Failures How To Buy &Amp; Care For Automotive Batteries

By Toni I Williams

A weak battery that will start a car or truck no fuss no muss in the middle of summer can leave you waiting for the motor league boost car vehicle in the middle of a cold Canadian winter season. Why is this? A lead acid automobile battery is based on a chemical process. The warmer it is the more the molecules bounce around to give you that vital electrical charge to turn your engines starter motor. Conversely in colder and especially frigid temperatures those molecules movements slow to a slug rate and your starter motor slowly lets out a growl that indicates not enough current and power to kick start your vehicle for you to drive away easily.

Battery failure is the number cause of automobile service calls. Here are steps to help you avoid being so stranded. To avoid the possibility and possibilities of being stranded in the cold and snow because of a dead battery, here is simple and straightforward advice on buying testing and cleaning automotive batteries.

First of all when you go to replace your battery either as preventative maintenance or as a necessary replace ensure that the battery has similar or even more cold-cranking capacity (CCA) as the original OEM ( original equipment manufacturer that is the vehicles brand maker) supplied battery and nothing less. True if you think that you will not be keeping the SUV Sports Utility Vehicle, truck or car for a short period of time you may go on the cheap side thinking a new battery will be more powerful than an older used battery of higher capacity will do. Or if you are trading in eh vehicle shortly and will not be the owners over a winter time period a very inexpensive battery might do the trick. Its your call and the money out of your pocketbook so to speak.

If you have bought the car or truck used and the battery or its replacement history is what might be considered an unknown entity, then a good rule of thumb is to purchase a battery with a CCA rating at least equal to the size of the engine in cubic inches. If you do not know the engine size (perhaps you are in Canada and the size is listed in metric terms), then either look online at the identical model on American websites or alternatively look under the hood in the engine compartment at the tune-up data placard in the engine compartments or within the documents that arrived with the car and most likely are in the glove box. Basically engines with 1 to 3 liters are smaller than 250 cubic inches; engines with a 4 liter class are in the ranges of 250 to 300 cubic inches. However if you live in colder climate such as the northern US states or up in northern Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta or BC Canada you might want to spend a bit more to get a larger capacity replacement auto battery.

Lastly batteries need to be maintained and cared for even if they are stamped maintenance free. Terminals routinely need to be inspected and cleaned with baking soda solution and a wire brush from time to time. Next examine, or have your local mechanic or dealership service center examine the battery cables for worn insulation, breaks or fraying. Replace both cables even if only one is damaged.

Lastly have the battery physically inspected as well. Have the sides and top of the battery inspected. Then as a matter of course have the unit replaced right away if the unit is found to be cracked or a chunk has perhaps broken off or away. Even if the battery passes a visual inspection ensure that the battery itself is firmly secured and that a quickie substandard installation was done and not a shoddy one. If you can shake the battery back and forth, its not a good sign. If you can shake the battery back and forth, take care to have the hold-downs to prevent future battery damage. If hold-downs are not supplied under the hood these are readily available at most auto supply stores and big box auto outlets.

With basic attention to detail, ongoing care and battery maintenance you will be much less likely to be stranded on the roadside waiting patiently or not so patiently for tow truck to give you a wintertime emergency battery boost.

“Woofstock” dog festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

“Woofstock” dog festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

North America’s largest outdoor dog festival came back to Toronto last weekend for its fifth year. It ran from the 9th of June to the 10th of June at Toronto’s historical St. Lawrence Market. A Wikinews reporter was there on Sunday to report on some of the events that happened on the last day.

The “Woofstock” dog festival attracted as many as 140,000 people with their dogs. The festival had tons of accessories, sold under tents, to buy for dogs; food, toys, designer clothes, and more. About 400 vendors and exhibitors were there to promote their products, which also gave private dog companies or groups a chance to show their new products. The local SPCA and some animal rescues were under tents answering questions from visitors. While walking, all visitors could see the CN Tower and other very tall buildings.

One of the local TV stations, Citytv, was there. They hosted a live event at the show which was broadcast on TV. People came up on the stage and asked questions regarding their dogs and the host and co-host answered them.

A man, who called himself the “Chalk Master”, drew two pictures on pavement with chalk. He did it for free but donations were welcome. One was a picture of a girl’s head beside a dog’s head, and another with a wolf.

“Hello Humans. I’ve been invited here to provide your eyeball(s), with some pretty colours. I don’t get paid as I work this weekend strictly for tips… so, if you like what you see please make a DONATION. If you don’t like it simply reach into the pocket of the person next to you and give me their money. CHALK MASTER.”

A contest called “Canada’s top dog” had its own tent with a professional photographer taking pictures of dogs behind a white screen; the winning photo is to be published on the cover of “Puppy and dog basics” magazine.

Large “Gourmet” dog bones were also served from a cart and table.

Next year’s festival is expected to be bigger and better with even more attractions.
