Four people have been arrested on terrorism charges in Islington, London, England, after a suspected petrol bombing on the house of Martin Rynja, owner of book publishing company Gibson Square.

His company recently sparked controversy after buying the rights to publish The Jewel of Medina, a work of fiction by Sherry Jones depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad and his child bride, Aisha.

The bombing, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, led to the evacuation of the £2.5 million property in Lonsdale Square. Three men, aged 22, 30 and 40, were arrested at 2:25am BST by armed officers, two in Lonsdale Square, and one after being stopped near Angel tube station.

Police comments suggested that the trio had been under surveillance, and that they had advance knowledge of the plot and simply waited for the arsonists to strike, before arresting them.

On Saturday, a woman was arrested for obstructing police during their searches of four addresses – two in Walthamstow, and two in Ilford and Forest Gate.

Speaking earlier this month, Mr Rynja said that “The Jewel of Medina has become an important barometer of our time. As an independent publishing company, we feel strongly that we should not be afraid of the consequences of debate.” Ms Jones commented that she did not intend for her novel to be offensive to Islam. She noted that she “[has] deliberately and consciously written respectfully about Islam and Muhammad.” She “envisaged that [her] book would be a bridge builder” between Islam and the western world.

Lordi release future Dark Floors soundtrack ‘Beast Loose in Paradise’ as single

Monday, December 24, 2007

Finnish theatrical hard rock band Lordi have released Beast Loose in Paradise – which will be the soundtrack to the band’s upcoming horror movie Dark Floors – as a downloadable single.

The song was originally intended to be released via Zed.fi, but for unknown reasons has not appeared on the site. However, it has appeared on at least two other sites as a pay-to-download single – MSN Music Finland and MTV3.fi.

The song was one of two recorded last month, and will be released by Sony BMG Finland as an actual CD on January 8 . The other song, titled Studs and Leather, was also written for the movie.

The cover art for the CD single has already been revealed. It is a direct tribute to the KISS album Creatures of the Night.

Most of both songs were composed during Lordi’s tour of the United States as part of Ozzfest, with the band’s lead vocalist saying in an interview with MonsterDiscoHell.com that the main riff of Beast Loose in Paradise was written in Milwaukee, while the chorus of Studs and Leather was composed in St. Augustine.

He went on to say that Studs and Leather had originally been intended for Bend over and Pray the Lord!, an unreleased album from 1999 that had been intended to be Lordi’s debut. The verses from Beast Loose in Paradise had been decided on between the whole band during therapy sessions at Christmas 2006. He said that he had written most of the rest between two US tours, the Ozzfest tour and a tour as the support act for American gothic doom metal band Type O Negative.

He continued to deny a recent rumour posted in Finnish music periodical Soundi that the new material was going to be “more brutal and raw” than that on Lordi’s last album, The Arockalypse. “Our music is not gonna get any brutal or heavier, but not any lighter [either]… I’d say these two songs are familiar Lordi. Although Beast Loose in Paradise is more ‘movie-esque’ and ‘horror-ish’ on purpose. And some might say it’s even heavier, but at the very least the chorus will be familiar and melodic Lordi stuff. And Studs and Leather is basically Heaven’s on Fire (KISS song) meets Balls To The Wall (Accept song).

Blue Badge Guides Fly The Flag For Liverpool’s World Heritage Status}

BLUE BADGE GUIDES FLY THE FLAG FOR LIVERPOOL’S WORLD HERITAGE STATUS

by

Neil McDonaldWe spoke to a Blue Badge Tourist Guide about Liverpool – how it has stormed into the list of top cities in the world to visit and how the threat of losing World Heritage Status could affect its future prosperity.Merseyside’s major city is a magnet for tourists the world over. Popular with Indonesians is a trip to Anfiled and LFC, taking in the ground’s selfie trail, the smart new visitor centre and ‘disney-esque’ merchandise shop. Culture vultures flock to admire the biggest collection of listed buildings in Britain. And the ever popular Beatles are a particular draw for American visitors. Leading local Tour Guide, Claire Rider, told us:’As well as individual travellers and tour groups, the city has seen more than one hundred thousand cruise liner passengers during 2017.’At busy periods there are large parties of Spanish and Italian, among other nationalities of students. International visitors exploring the city in 2016 contributed to the region’s visitor economy that exceeded 4.3 billion. Claire, who is based in Liverpool, explains why this booming business is under threat:’We’re a city rich in maritime heritage, this has driven many ground breaking moments in history. For instance we had the first branch of the Bank of England outside London; the first American Embassy on foreign soil and the global cotton exchange is still in the city centre. Until people arrive here they often don’t realise the significance of the city to The British Empire over centuries. But for many others the UNESCO World Heritage Status communicates that simply and instantly.’During the last decade the number of day visitors has almost doubled. It’s no wonder the city’s tourism industry is twitchy at the thought of being downgraded. The chance of the city being struck off as a World Heritage site centres on a planning decision to transform 60 hectares of redundant docklands into 9,000 flats, offices and shops. The model for the scheme has been described by The Guardian newspaper as resembling a ‘row of gaudy crystal ornaments’.The same newspaper carried an interview with the mayor of Liverpool. It claims he has dismissed the anti-development campaigners as luddites and the UNESCO ‘certificate on the wall’ didn’t play a role in boosting the city’s prospects. Claire added:’The guiding qualification takes months and is a hefty financial commitment. The blue badge is the UK’s highest guiding endorsement. There are dozens of qualified guides in the city and many more tourist guides. Their continued employment is more secure with the UNESCO endorsement. To be qualified by The Institute of Tourist Guiding we have to learn about the entire UK. We’ve all been through that training, with the in depth knowledge acquired I can honestly say that if any city deserves the UNESCO accolade it’s Liverpool.’In July 2017 UNESCO officials gave Liverpool a stay of execution for up to 12 months. Campaigners are not resting on their laurels whilst the Mercantile City remains on the World Heritage ‘In Danger’ list. The entire situation does open up the debate on whether skyscrapers detract from the fact that the destination was a major trading centre for two centuries. Six sites were added to the World Heritage list in 2004 in recognition of their role in the growth of the British Empire. Some argue that in London the Shard and The Gherkin have been built close to World Heritage sites without threat to their status. But in contrast the 5bn worth of buildings planned for the Liverpool waterfront would occupy up to 600,000 square metres. The UNESCO officials will have to take a view on whether local planning officers are acting in the interests of local heritage. To put it into context other World Heritage sites across the globe include the Taj Mahal, the Grand Canyon and the pyramids in Egypt.Another proposed building that forms part of the proposals is a permanent cruise liner terminal. Nobody in the tourism industry would argue one is not required, but they may question at what cost. The plans are adjacent to Liverpool’s Three Graces and would entirely transform the skyline.Henrietta Billings, Director of SAVE Britain’s Heritage is quoted as saying:’This is a final warning shot for Liverpool and the British Government. International heritage status doesn’t just put LIverpool on the world stage, it brings cultural tourism, urban regeneration, and sustainable visitor attractions.’Billings went on to say losing the status would be an international embarrassment and hugely costly mistake. The current reprieve stands until 2018.

Claire Rider holds the highest UK endorsement for tourist guiding – The Blue Badge. Based in Liverpool, she shares her thoughts on the positive impact of tourism on the city and how the UNESCO World Heritage status underpins this. The city’s guides welcome visitors from across the world to show them the amazing architecture, history and culture. Many run day excursions and tours that take in The Lake District, North Wales, Ireland and The Isle of Man.

British supermarket chain Tesco to sell its Polish branch to Salling Group A/S

British supermarket chain Tesco to sell its Polish branch to Salling Group A/S

Sunday, June 21, 2020

On Thursday, UK-based retailer Tesco and Denmark-based retailer Salling Group announced their agreement over selling a large portion of Tesco’s Polish operation to Salling Group. Tesco stated its intention to leave the Polish market altogether, Salling its intention to strengthen its Netto chain in Poland.

The deal covers 301 stores, two distribution centers and the head office. With the acquisition Salling said it seeks to improve its coverage in Southern Poland and, over 18 months at a cost of one billion z?otys, intends to merge these stores into its currently 386 strong Netto chain. Salling also takes over about 7000 employees from Tesco — Netto Poland currently has about 5000 employees. Tesco continues to run 19 stores, which were not included in this package.

The sale price, to be payed in cash, is 900 million z?otys (181 million pounds). In the 2019/20 fiscal year, Tesco said its Polish branch had a 24 million pounds operating loss with a 1368 million pounds turnover; to which the sold units contributed with a 947 million pounds turnover for a 107 million loss. At fiscal year-end, the sold units held a value of 681 million pounds in the books.

UOKiK, the Polish anti-monopoly agency, has to approve the deal. The parties said they expect a decision this year.

Tesco has suffered losses from its Polish operation for several years, as customer preference has shifted away from hypermarkets, Tesco’s preferred store size, to smaller discount stores like Biedronka and LIDL. The Sunday trade ban, introduced in 2018, also hurt sales. According to Notes from Poland (NFP), some discount stores resorted to offer postal services, a loophole which allows Sunday opening hours.

In 2015, Tesco centralized its management in the Central European region, comprising Czechia, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia, but reverted the decision later on. At the time, the company invested in e-commerce and started home deliveries, but Gazeta Prawna reports only 0.5% of Polish grocery turnover comes from this segment, compared to 7% in the United Kingdom.

In the past few years, Tesco Polska has cut expenditures by streamlining its product range, halving its staff, shutting off home deliveries in parts of the country, and closing off stores, reportedly including last year its Poznan distribution center. Deutsche Welle (DW) reported in mid-2019, 62 Tesco outlets had closed within a year. Staff layoffs left meat, fish and delicatessen departments without designated shop assistants, and forced staff canteen closures and administration simplifications.

Tesco sold its roughly 2000 Thai and 74 Malaysian stores to Charoen Pokphand in March; announced leaving its joint venture with China Resources Holdings in February; and in 2015 sold its South Korean chain HomePlus. Speaking to Portfolio.hu, Matt Simister, Tesco’s CEO for Central Europe, explained that the company held a 4% share of the Polish retail market, compared to its 16% share in Hungary, and stated they want to stay in Hungary. In a DW report in March of last year, Dave Lewis, CEO of Tesco, stated they did not have intentions of leaving Thailand or Poland.

Tesco’s Polish operation, according to Gazeta Wyborcza in March, is too big for a single monolithic sale. The chain’s press release reported 22 sold units in the past year and a half, for around 200 million pounds. NFP named the Kaufland chain and property developer Echo Investment among the buyers.

Both Tesco and Salling entered the Polish market in 1995.

Canada’s west coast battles high winds

Canada’s west coast battles high winds

Thursday, November 16, 2006

Currently, there are blackouts, heavy rain, and high winds in British Columbia. Over 220,000 BC Hydro customers have no power. Buildings have already collapsed and trees have been knowed down. Five Vancouver rivers were in danger of flooding, which rain fell at 10 mm an hour for more than six hours at midday.

The steel frame of a four-storey building under construction in Vancouver collapsed. Construction workers escaped injury, luckily they were on a coffee break at the time of the incident. The steel frame crushed cars in a parking lot and missed a truck driver.

Citizens had to evacuate a subdivision of 30 homes. The winds smashed trees into houses in West Vancouver.

“We have some real fears here with electrical problems,” said Captain Rob Jones Cook of the Vancouver Fire Department. “This is impinging on electrical poles and lamp standards. We also have hydro bus lines running down two sides of the building.” The Vancouver Fire Department says they have no idea as to why the building collapsed.

Winds are gusting at more than 100 kilometres an hour (62 mph) in some areas and rainfall amounts of 50 to 130 millimetres.

According BC Hydro spokeswoman Elisha Moreno, the hardest-hit areas are Vancouver, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford and Mission, B.C. “We’re trying to be optimistic and hoping it’s by end of day today, but there may very well be customers that are into the early-morning hours before restoration,” Moreno said.

Extensive ferry cancellations, road closures, and massive power outages are in effect until the storm ends.

The RCMP have advised people to stay home and off the highway.

The same heavy weather has also affected nearby Washington State, USA.

Experiment on frozen sperm raises hopes of “restoring” extinct mammals

Experiment on frozen sperm raises hopes of “restoring” extinct mammals

Tuesday, August 15, 2006

According to Japanese and American scientists, healthy offspring have resulted from the injection of sperm into female mice from male mice that have been in a deep freeze for 15 years. The mice, as a whole, were kept frozen in temperatures of -20 degrees celsius.

Scientists at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research Bioresource Center which is located in Tsukuba, Japan, say that cryogenic techniques were not used and that the mice were kept in a freezer.

Scientists also say that the sperm was not alive when it was thawed out. At least one out of every five females that were injected with the sperm, gave birth to healthy offspring which are also fertile.

“Obviously, those frozen [sperm] were all dead in the conventional sense. Motionless sperm had no chance whatsoever of fertilising in vivo or in vitro. Nevertheless, some of these, if not all, were … genomically intact, because they were able to produce apparently normal offspring,” said the researchers.

The idea behind the experiment is that scientists say that the results now make it possible to bring back prehistoric animals or extinct animals such as the woolly mammoth, but because any fully intact body found would have been frozen for over 10,000 years and would likely be too damaged organisms and bacterias. Endangered species such as elephants could also be reproduced, but scientists also say that the chances of an experiment like that of being successful are still “slim.”

“Restoration of extinct species could be possible if male individuals are found in permafrost. If sperm of extinct mammalian species, for example the woolly mammoth, can be retrieved from animal bodies that were kept frozen for millions of years in permanent frost, live animals might be restored by injecting them into oocytes [eggs] from females of closely related species,” said Dr. Narumi Ogonuki, head of the team who made the discovery.

Bash The Banker

Submitted by: Jerry Rodgers

Leading executives from America s eight largest banks testified on Capitol Hill February 11, as Congress asked how they spent $165 billion in federal money. Legislators had four questions in mind:

1)Where did the money go?

2)Why aren t you lending as much as we would like?

3)How challenged for capital are you?

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZKKNKYbnCE[/youtube]

4)Are you really going to be frugal?

Question #1 was answered in varying degrees. Bob Kelly of The Bank of New York Mellon said the $3 billion BONY received was used to buy $1.7 billion of mortgage-backed securities and debentures and $900 million of debt securities from other healthy financial institutions ; the remaining $400 million was used for interbank lending. Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein told Congress that Goldman Sachs has committed over $13 billion in new financing to support our clients since getting a $10 billion TARP injection.Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit said the TARP money translated to $36.5 billion in new lending initiatives and other new programs. Other CEOs were less specific.

Question #2 has been in the air for weeks. Are the banks actually using TARP money to lend, or simply to stabilize themselves? All CEOs maintained they were using TARP funds responsibly, and that lending levels had increased or were increasing. While praising the idea of a systemic risk regulator to supervise the U.S. financial markets, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon detailed that bank s 4Q activity: $50+ billion in new consumer loans, $20+ billion in new credit for small and mid-sized businesses, about $90 billion in new and renewed corporate loans, and an average of $50 billion a day in interbank lending.Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis testified that BofA arranged $115 billion in new consumer and business loans in 4Q 2008, and renewed roughly $70 billion in credit lines in addition to buying loans in bulk. Wells Fargo & Co. CEO John Stumpf said that Wells Fargo had made $72 billion worth of loans last quarter and restored lines of credit to some Wachovia customers formerly denied credit.

As for Question #3, Stumpf proudly cited a profit of almost three billion dollars last year at Wells Fargo.5 The Bank of New York Mellon s Kelly assured Congress that we were profitable every quarter last year . Blankfein pointed out that Goldman Sachs had turned a profit of $2.2 billion in 2008.Other testimonies were less specific.

Question #4 was answered with acknowledgements of what Citigroup s Pandit called a new reality . Pandit told Congress that his salary would be $1 per year with no bonuses until the situation improves. Pandit told Congress that I get the new reality and I will make sure Citi gets it too. 5 The eight testifying CEOs said they earned from $600,000 to $1.5 million in 2008; none received bonuses. However, seven of the eight CEOs admitted that their firms owned or leased aircraft. In 2008, Wall Street firms still paid out more than $18 billion in bonuses, and financial firms still planned the occasional merit-based resort getaway.

Banks need to be held accountable. Why are we in this mess? Too many banks got away from the fundamentals. For decades, they originated home loans and assumed the credit risk themselves. Suddenly, they found ways they could pass the credit risk to investors. Fast-and-loose lending was keyed to assumptions that real estate would probably always go up in value. No person would be advised to owe 25 or 30 times their net worth, but this somehow became permissible for financial institutions.

Consumers made mistakes too. In the last decade or so, American consumers were seduced away from core principles of saving and investing. As the New York Times David Leonhardt observed, too many of our financial decisions were made for our present self instead of our future self , and they mostly involved spending. The recession is teaching us to save. In December, Americans saved about 3.6% of their disposable income, three to four times more than the norm in recent years.

However, personal spending is still the engine of our economy. If we save too much, we re siphoning fuel from that engine. If the personal savings rate increases, this means more money going into banks. That s good. The question is whether we can spend and save at appropriate levels at the same time.

Can we do both? Actually, we ve done it for decades. Only recently did we get away from the fundamentals and look how that affected our economy. Fortunately, our government is working hard to shore up our financial system. We have a trillion-dollar campaign in the works to buy up toxic assets, stress test banks, and inject more capital into them. The banking system has got to be fixed; consumers have got to be encouraged. The government is positioning its resources to boldly do both tasks.

Are you planning for your future self ? It may be a challenge, yet it is also necessary. A chat with your financial consultant might give you some long-range perspective and some ideas for how to reach your short- and long-term goals.

Australia: Wikinews interviews Wayne Connop, independent candidate for Daly by-election

Monday, September 6, 2021

In the Northern Territory of Australia, voters in the electoral division of Daly are scheduled to vote for a new Member of the Legislative Assembly on September 11. The previous Member, Ian Sloan of the Country Liberal Party (CLP), resigned in August. Daly covers communities near Darwin, as well as more remote places such as Timber Creek and Wadeye.

Wikinews spoke to one of the four candidates in Daly, Wayne Connop, who is running as an independent candidate. Connop has previously stood for both the Labor Party (ALP) and the CLP. He pleaded guilty to perjury in 2018 after inaccurately claiming on his website that his legal expertise covered work, health, and safety law.
