Centennial of ‘father of contemporary Thai cinema’ celebrated

Saturday, May 24, 2008

Thailand’s National Film Archive in Salaya, Nakhon Pathom unveiled a new museum and cinema on Thursday night for the 100th anniversary celebration of the birth of Rattana Pestjoni, a filmmaker who is considered the “father of contemporary Thai cinema”.

With Pestonji’s family, movie stars, filmmakers, government officials and fans on hand, the National Film Archive’s museum was opened for tours, and the facility’s 120-seat cinema hosted the screening of a documentary film, Signature: The Life and Work of R.D. Pestonji.

Pestonji was born in Bangkok on May 22, 1908, to a Parsi-Indian (ethnic Persian) family. For his first short film, Tang, in 1937, he received an award from Alfred Hitchcock at a film festival in Scotland. Pestonji directed his first feature film, Dear Dolly, in 1951. He was known for his skills as a cinematographer, and he shot the first Thai feature film to be submitted to an overseas film festival. Pestonji also pushed for innovations in the Thai film industry, such as using 35mm film, and raising the level of cinematography as an artistic element of the films, said film historian Dome Sukwong, director of the National Film Archive.

The now-lost Santi-Weena was submitted to the Asia-Pacific Film Festival in 1954 in Tokyo. Pestonji served as cinematographer on it as well as Forever Yours, in 1955. He then directed four features, Country Hotel in 1957, Dark Heaven in 1958, Black Silk in 1961, and Sugar Is Not Sweet in 1964. His films were never box-office successes, which led to Pestonji retiring from feature-film work to make television commercials, Sukwong said.

Pestonji died of a heart attack on August 17, 1970 at the Montien Hotel Bangkok, while giving a speech to government officials and film industry executives about the prevalence of Hollywood films in Thailand’s cinemas.

Contemporary directors who were influenced by Pestonji include Wisit Sasanatieng and Pen-ek Ratanaruang (Last Life in the Universe). Sasanatieng was among the filmmakers present at Thursday’s event.

Prae Dum [Black Silk] is the film that remains my single major influence,” Sasanatieng was quoted as saying by the Bangkok Post. Sasanatieng’s colorful features, Tears of the Black Tiger and Citizen Dog bear many of the hallmarks of Pestonji’s films. “Khun Ratana was not simply a master storyteller … he knew how to use color, art direction and camera angles to create subtle nuances and charge the movie with strong emotions.”

Pestonji’s sons, Santa and Edel, have continued in the film business. The Bangkok film production house their father started now houses a firm that hires out equipment and film crews to foreign films shooting on location in Thailand. Films that the company has been involved with include Heaven & Earth and The Beach. Pestonji’s daughter, Ratanavadi Ratanabhand, was the lead actress in 1961’s Black Silk.

The Pestonji centennial celebration was the first major event held in the new facilities at the National Film Archive, which moved around 10 years ago to the Fine Arts Department compound in Nakhon Pathom Province, about 50 kilometers from Bangkok, where the archive had been previously located. The museum and cinema complex were built in the last year, and Thursday’s event was the first major function held at the facility, said Chalida Uabumrungjit of the Thai Film Foundation, which has worked closely with the National Film Archive to preserve Pestonji’s legacy. The foundation holds the rights to Pestonji’s films and plans to issue a DVD set of his works later this year.

The centerpiece of the archive’s museum is a wax figure of Pestonji, seated with his prized Mitchell camera in front of a recreation of the set from his 1957 musical comedy Country Hotel.

In a manner similar to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, handprints, footprints and signatures of celebrities are being collected in the concrete outside the museum’s cinema. That initiative started on Thursday with actor Prompong Nopparit, a spokesman for the Ministry of Culture, being the first to make his marks.

Other stars making impressions included actor Suthep Wongkamheng, who starred in Pestonji’s Dark Heaven. A rain storm dampened the festivities, but didn’t keep 1970s action star Sombat Metanee from making his mark in the slab, albeit under cover of umbrellas. Other figures adding their marks to the wet cement were pioneering animator Payut Ngaokrachang and Santa Pestonji, Ratana’s eldest son.

Australian PM Gillard pressured to address human rights crackdown in China

Monday, April 25, 2011

The international organisation Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard to publicly address China’s recent crackdown on dissidents, during her visit to the country from April 25th to 28th.

In an open letter HRW called on Prime Minister Gillard to address the increasing use of repressive force in China. According to HRW at least 39 lawyers and activists have been arrested and between 100 and 200 others have been victims of repressive measures such as house arrest, since February 16th.

Prime Minister Gillard is currently on a tour of Asia which included a stop in the disaster hit regions of Japan. She told Australian media before departing that she would “of course be raising human rights (with China).” “Our view of course is that we raise human rights. We have a human rights dialogue with China. That dialogue was in session as recently as December last year.”

HRW’s Asia advocacy director Sophie Richardson said that whilst Prime Minister Gillard has expressed concern in Canberra, “the test is whether she will do so publicly in Beijing”

The issue of human rights in China is of particular interest in Australia following the disappearance – and feared arrest – of Australian citizen and pro-democracy activist Yang Hengjun in China last month. The political blogger and writer disappeared in Guangzhou in March and although he has since resurfaced, he has not publicly stated exactly what happened during the two day period that he was missing.

Multiple Applications Of Enzymes In Disease Diagnosis

Enzymes are biocatalysts produced by living cells in organisms, most of which are usually globular proteins. These enzymes can effectively catalyze various biochemical reactions and promote the metabolism of organisms under normal human conditions. Life activities such as digestion, absorption, breathing, exercise, and reproduction are all enzymatic reactions. Therefore, enzymes are the basis for cell survival.

There are many kinds of enzymes in the human body, and more than 3,000 enzymes have been discovered, such as pepsin, trypsin and other hydrolytic enzymes. The protein that the human body takes in from food must be hydrolyzed into amino acids under the action of pepsin. Under the action of other enzymes, more than 20 kinds of amino acids can be selected and then reorganized into various other proteins required by the human body. Many complex reactions occurred during the whole process. It can be said that without enzymes, biological metabolism will not continue, and the entire colorful biological community in nature will disappear. Now we know the importance of enzymes in organisms, which is why enzymes can be used for clinical diagnosis.

Blood Lipids Tests

Blood lipids refer to a group of fatty substances present in the blood, mainly including cholesterol and triglycerides. Cholesterol circulating in the blood usually comes in two forms: low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). As LDL accumulates in the container, it may cause LDL to be “bad” and may cause blockage. High-density lipoproteins are called “good” because they help reduce bad cholesterol in the blood. Triglycerides come from food and are mainly used as energy sources. Abnormal blood lipid levels are usually associated with many diseases, such as hypertension, coronary arteries, hypothyroidism, type 2 diabetes, obesity, pancreatitis, etc. Enzymes involved in lipid metabolism have been extensively studied. Creative Enzymes provides a variety of enzymes for blood lipid test from different sources to help you in your research.

Liver Function Test

Liver function tests are essential for the early diagnosis of liver disease and the treatment of patients with liver dysfunction. A variety of enzymatic reactions have been developed to detect the presence of abnormal substances associated with different types of liver diseases or liver damage. Creative Enzymes has been supporting the clinical and research uses of liver function assessment through its diagnostic enzyme products.

Kidney Function Test

The main function of the kidneys is to remove waste and excess fluid from the blood by producing urine. The pancreas is responsible for the production of digestive enzymes and insulin. Early kidney and pancreas dysfunction did not show obvious symptoms, which may lead to severe dysfunction. Therefore, the early diagnosis of kidney and pancreas has attracted widespread attention. Since the chemicals, enzymes and other compounds secreted from the kidneys and pancreas are generally stable in quality and quantity, the abnormal presence of specific entities in the fluid or elevated levels of certain enzymes indicates an abnormal state of the kidneys or pancreas. For example, inflammation of the kidneys leads to increased levels of amylase in the blood, which can be determined by maltase and glucoamylase. Urease is a key enzyme used to detect renal failure by measuring urea content. Creative Enzymeshas been serving kidney & pancreas function diagnostic enzymes for years in the global market. More about kidney function test can be reached at Creative Enzymes’s website.

It is obvious from the above that enzymes play an irreplaceable important role in the field of clinical diagnosis and treatment. As a part of bioengineering, the important functions and research results of enzymes have been recognized worldwide. Making full use of the catalytic function, expanding the scope of application, and improving the application efficiency of enzymes have become our main goals. Creative Enzymes, as an enzyme manufacturer, are endeavoring to do so.

Explosion in San Francisco injures one, cause unknown

Friday, August 19, 2005

An explosion from an underground utility chamber in downtown San Francisco severely injured a woman and shattered a window at a Ralph Lauren clothing store shortly after 10:00 a.m. Pacific time Friday. According to a caller to KCBS radio, a woman was engulfed in flames after the explosion triggered a fire in the store. The fire was quickly put out.

A bomb squad is currently investigating the explosion, and the cause has yet to be determined. One official said the explosion may have been caused by an electrical transformer. A witness described a fireball coming out of the side of the building

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. company spokesman Paul Moreno has stated that “there was no indication of a gas leak.” Moreno also described the aftermath of the blast. “The explosion did displace manhole covers — two round steel ones — and it also displaced a concrete cover as well,” Moreno said.

Some accounts have described a rift in the sidewalk caused by the explosion below.

Construction worker Tom Demartini, who was sitting in his truck outside the Ralph Lauren store, stated he saw the sidewalk rise up six or seven inches. “It sounded like a big poof, then there was a lot of smoke,” Demartini said. “One woman looked like she was badly burned.”

The burned woman was taken to the emergency room at St. Francis Hospital. Hospital spokeswoman Linda Gillespie had no immediate comment on her condition. Her name was not released.

Workers in a nearby office building described how the blast shook their buildings and that they thought it was an earthquake. According to one woman, the elevator in her building stopped.

Scores of police have evacuated buildings several blocks around the explosion. Kearny street between Sutter and Market has been closed to both vehicles and pedestrians.

High percentage of US patients on placebos without knowing it

High percentage of US patients on placebos without knowing it

Friday, January 4, 2008

A new study amongst doctors in the United States on the use of placebos—pills with no medical effect—shows that almost half of the questioned practitioners prescribe placebos, most of them within the last year.

The majority of 466 faculty physicians at Chicago-area medical schools interviewed by a research group of the University of Chicago stated that placebos are useful to calm a patient down or to respond to demands for medication that the doctor disagrees with, i.e. “to get the patient to stop complaining”.

96 percent of the physicians surveyed believe that placebos can have therapeutic effects. Close to 40 percent stated that placebos could benefit patents physiologically as well as mentally.

Twelve percent of surveyed physicians think that placebos should be banned from clinical practice. Among the doctors who prescribed them, one in five said they outright lied to patients by claiming a placebo was medication. But more often the physicians came up with ways to explain like that “this may help you but I’m not sure how it works.”

The American Medical Association (AMA), the largest association of U.S. doctors and medical students, tells its members that “[p]hysicians may use placebos for diagnosis or treatment only if the patient is informed of and agrees to its use.” The research, published in Journal of General Internal Medicine this week, is the first major U.S. study of doctors on the use of placebos since 1979.

Garden Tips For Planting Super Sweet Grape Tomatoes

By Mark Kessler

Spring time comes and with it comes the time to plant your garden. Garden tips range from the type of soil to plant in to ways to water your plants in order to get a full yield. However, when planting grape tomato seeds, the main garden tip is to plant them in a container inside. This will help keep them warm and give them a safe growing environment.

The best garden tip for planting sweet grape tomatoes is to prepare the soil properly. Using a good soil is essential and it doesn’t hurt to beef it up a bit. Depending upon where you live, soil can range anywhere from very fertile to don’t plant here dirt. When living in an area that has dirt that is not ideal for planting, go to a garden store and ask what type of soil they advise. The more fertile the soil, the better the plants will grow.

If organic grape tomatoes are what you seek, using ordinary potting soil and an indoor container will keep the insects away and will make the tomatoes pesticide free.

Container gardening will help those who live in apartments or houses without large yards grow tomatoes indoors. These containers range from the average flower pot to multi-plant containers that can hold up to a dozen small plants.

Another form of container gardening is to rent or buy a hydroponics system to grow your tomatoes in water. Growing grape tomatoes in a hydroponics system guarantees a completely organic, juicy, and super sweet grape tomatoes.

The only problem with using a hydroponics system is finding a way to prop growing tomato plants up while they scale to new heights.

The greatest garden tip that you’ll ever receive is to water your plants. The more water that a tomato contains, the more watering it will need. Tomatoes are approximately ninety percent water and if they are not watered enough they will end up being shriveled and sour. No one likes a sour grape tomato, so keep your tomatoes warm and the soil wet and you’ll have super sweet grape tomatoes growing in no time.

Hospitals declare “code red” in Wellington, New Zealand

Thursday, July 19, 2007

The Capital & Coast District Health Board today issued a “code red” for two Wellington hospitals. Both Wellington Hospital and Kenepuru Community Hospital have a staff shortage of about 20 nurses, and the hospital is calling on any help available.

Dr Robyn Toomath, director of clinical support services at the Health Board, is calling for “any qualified nurses in the community who are between jobs, are on extended leave or are semi-retired, who might be able to help fill in, or to do some short term work for us.”

“As of today we are around 20 nurses down compared to our usual staffing levels, primarily due to illness” said Dr Toomath. “We have physical beds available, but we can’t admit patients unless there are appropriate levels of staff to safely resource those beds.”

The message to the general public was to “please save our Emergency Department for emergencies”, she said. “We want to be able to focus our Emergency Department resources on patients who genuinely need hospital-level care.”

Any qualified nurses who are willing to help at either of the two hospitals should contact Steve Crew in the Patient Services Coordination Unit, at the Capital and Coast District Health Board.

The Best Way To Wash Your Dog

Submitted by: Lance Baker

Even If your dog can be so easy to take care of she will need care for her appearance. This does not have to be each month however from time to time she will need a dogie bath. It’s a good idea to spend a while to learn the fundamentals and the best ways to use prior to you giving her a bath. This will make your life a bit easier.

You may be asking why should give her a bath at all. Well, the main purpose you would desire to offer your dog a dogie bath is to help in her health care program. This preventive care can help you uncover something she might have, in addition to it you may well save her life, you may discovered some types of lumps beneath her skin.

Most dogs have a dislike for the bath. Hence when you take out your bathtub she can even have a panic attack so hopefully this article may provide you with the fundamentals of washing your dog in addition to try to help you and your dog to have a joyful experience.

The most important thing you can do for yourself and your dog is to get her use to being touched all over her body. Most appropriate time if you can do this is at an early age and if you have and older dog then start off little by little with her. Rub her from head to toe and often and soon she will enjoy being touched and rubbed. Touch her ears, face, tail and give loads of praise and a possible treat for being such a good girl.

How To Wash Your Dog:

You are going to want a few items before you begin the bath. First, item you are going to need is a tub, and then a non- slip mat, a gallon plastic container, some warm water and the biggest thing (most people make this mistake ) is not to use human shampoo. Apply shampoo that is made for canines. Dogs can end up with dry flaky skin if people shampoo is used.

Place your dog into the bath on the non- skid mat and pour the warm water over her starting from the back and move forward. Be careful when you reach the face area for the fact that your dogs eyes are sensitive. Place a little shampoo onto her and rub gently into a good lather and move forward to the face and once more be careful of the eyes in addition to ears. If you get water into the ears make sure to get it out because this may well lead into and ear infection.

Now it is time to rinse you dog with clean warm water and make sure that you get all the shampoo off or this could lead to dry skin.

Next take her out of the bath and stand her on a towel and begin to dry her off. You may also want your hair drier to help dry her off speedily. Put the hair drier on low setting in order that you don’t burn your dog. You know how hot hot these hair driers can get. Hence be careful.

The biggest mistake that puppy owners do when they wash their puppy is to be nervous. Your dog will pick up on your emotional state and will mimic that state. Hence if your are nervous then your dog is going to be nervous. Therefore stay relaxed and have fun giving your dog a bath.
