Easy Tips In Cutting Dog’s Nails

Submitted by: Jerri Nice D. Torres

Your dogs need regular grooming. And part of this process is cutting your dog’s nails. Knowing how to do it, when to cut them, and how to avoid problems with long nails in dogs are necessary for most dog owners to learn.

Assess your dog. Before you plan on how you are going to trim your dog’s nails, you first need to determine if, indeed, its nails need trimming. Hold your pet in a comfortable position and look at its nails. You will be able to easily distinguish acceptable lengths and those that required to be cut. Also, you will be sure that the nails need to be cut to a shorter length if you hear that they are clicking on concrete or any hard floor.

When ingrown nails have developed, your dog will seem restless. It might look as if it is complaining about pain in his foot. Also, you might be able to notice it limp or have an unequal gait.

Sometimes, you just need to follow a regular schedule. Dogs usually require their nails to be cut about every 3 to 4 weeks. This gap is enough to let the nails grow and to avoid ingrown.

Prepare needed materials. Once you see that your pet’s nails badly need to be trimmed, you can now gather the materials that you need to use. There are several things that you will need to make sure everything goes smoothly. There can be dogs that are not well-behaved and having all the things that you can possibly need nearby will save you a lot of energy and times.

You will need a towel to protect your lap with. Also, you need to use dog nail clippers that cut well. You should only use trimmers that are designed for pets. Of course, they need to be sharp. You might only injure your dogs if the clippers that you are using can’t quite do the job well. Lastly, you will need emery boards to use for filing the nails.

Hold your dog. The most common position while cutting your dogs nails is when you are holding it on your lap. You will be able to secure its body and keep it from moving too much. Also, this will give you easy access to the nails that you need to cut.

Another alternative is for you to hold your dog in a leash. You just secure them in an area and you can now start cutting its nails. Putting your dog inside cages or kennels is also a viable option. But, do remember that for these techniques, your dog can move abruptly. Accidents can occur during these unguarded moments.

Cut well. Aside from using sharp clippers, you should ensure that you are cutting at the right lengths. Take note that too short or very long nails have a lot of disadvantages. Not only will they be uncomfortable, they may also be a cause for injuries.

Israeli chess players barred at chess tournament in Saudi Arabia

Wednesday, December 27, 2017

On Sunday, vice-president of World Chess Federation (FIDE) Israel Gelfer told Reuters that visas for seven Israeli chess players “will not be issued” for a chess tournament in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The 2017 King Salman Rapid and Blitz World Championships from December 26 to December 30 in Riyadh is to go ahead without any changes, the vice-president said.

Spokesperson of the Saudi Arabian embassy in the US Fatimah Baeshen tweeted, “Related to the purported politicization of the International Chess Tournament hosted by Riyadh: the Kingdom has allowed the participation of all citizens. The exception is whereby KSA has historically not had diplomatic ties with a specific country-thus has maintained its policy.”

Saudi Arabia does not recognise Israel. Despite their diplomatic tensions with Iran, Israel, and Qatar, FIDE tweeted they had “secured” visas for Qatari and Iranian chess players on Monday. In November, FIDE’s deputy president Georgios Makropoulos told Reuters they were “making a huge effort to ensure that all players get their visas”.

Speaking to Reuters, Israeli Chess Federation’s spokesperson Lior Aizenberg said, “The event is not a world championship if they prevent chess players from several countries from taking part […] Every chess player should have the right to participate in an event on the basis of professional criteria, regardless of their passports, their place of issue or the stamps they bear.”

Moshe Shalev of the Israel Chess Federation said they were “thinking about suing the World Chess Federation”.

About 180 chess players were to participate in the event. The total prize money of the tournament is US$2 million, with largest individual prize money about US$750 thousand.

In November, chess Grand Master Hikaru Nakamura tweeted, “To organize a chess tournament in a country where basic human rights aren’t valued is horrible. Chess is a game where all different sorts of people can come together, not a game in which people are divided because of their religion or country of origin.”

This is not the first time Israeli players have faced problems while playing in the Middle East nations. In October, Israeli judokas were not permitted to wear the Israeli flag or symbols, or bear the country’s name on their judo uniform for a judo grand slam in the United Arab Emirates. Israeli judokas had to compete without their national flag and the anthem of the International Judo Federation was played at the medal ceremony when Israeli athlete Tal Flicker won a gold medal.

2008 Leisure Taiwan launched in Taipei World Trade Center

Saturday, July 19, 2008

This year’s Leisure Taiwan trade show (a.k.a Taiwan Sport Recreation and Leisure Show) started yesterday, with 131 companies participating including sports media companies such as ESPN and VideoLand Television, businesses selling sports equipment and fitness clubs.

There were also a variety of sports being played in the arena built for the trade show. The events included a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, free style shooting, and bicycle test-riding. In addition, conferences discussed issues related to sports and physical education.

A major topic in the trade show was energy-efficiency and, as a result, bicycles and similar sports equipment were being heavily promoted.

Next Tuesday, companies from the electronics industry plan to promote their industry at “2008 Digital E-Park.” In previous years, organizations from the electronics industry have showcased their products at Leisure Taiwan instead of at the Digital E-Park, so this move has reduced the number of markets covered by Leisure Taiwan.

2010 BRIT Awards highlights

Friday, February 19, 2010

The 2010 BRIT Awards, presented by the British Phonographic Industry, is an annual award ceremony for music artists. This year, the competition took place in the Earls Court Exhibition Centre in London, England. The event started taking place in 1980, with this year’s event being the 30th BRIT Awards. This year, the programme was broadcast live – although with a short delay to allow censorship of strong language – on ITV1 from 2000-2200 GMT on Tuesday. 5.8 million viewers watched it, which was an audience share of 21.9%.

The main presenter of the programme was British comedian Peter Kay, although various other celebrities also presented awards, including actor Andy Serkis, musician Melanie Brown, singer Shirley Bassey, television and radio presenter Jonathan Ross, actor Idris Elba, singer Geri Halliwell, television presenter Cat Deeley, comedian Alan Carr, singer Mika, fashion designer and film director Tom Ford, former glamour model Samantha Fox, musician Noddy Holder and musician and actress Courtney Love. Fearne Cotton was also a backstage presenter during the event. There was also an after show highlights programme broadcast on ITV2, immediately after the programme on ITV1 had finished, from 2200-2300 GMT. Presenting on the programme was Rufus Hound and Caroline Flack. BBC Radio 1 also had continuous official coverage on the station throughout the day of the awards, with disc jockeys Scott Mills and Greg James hosting a programme on the station at around the time of the award ceremony.

The BRITs is a celebration of all that is totally outstanding and unique about British music. But what’s less well known about the BRITs is the fantastic work it does raising millions of pounds for the BRIT trust which has benefited thousands of young people to develop their talents and generally enrich our society. Well done on all you’ve achieved.

Various artists, all of which were BRIT Award nominees, performed during the ITV1 programme. Lily Allen, JLS and Kasabian were amongst the performers. American musician Lady Gaga said that “[t]his is for Alexander McQueen“, who died on February 11, 2010, before performing two of her tracks – Telephone and Dance in the Dark. Dizzee Rascal and Florence and the Machine performed a duet entitled You’ve Got the Dirtee Love, which was a merger of two songs – You’ve Got the Love, which was originally recorded by The Source and Candi Staton – and later covered by Florence and the Machine – and Dirtee Cash, which was originally performed by Dizzee Rascal.

After Jay-Z and Alicia Keys performed their song Empire State of Mind, Cheryl Cole performed her track, Fight For This Love, although the performance featured excerpts from Show Me Love, a track that was originally recorded by Robin S.

Lady Gaga won all three awards that she was nominated for, including “International female solo artist”, “International breakthrough act” and “International album”, the latter being for The Fame. In one of her acceptance speeches, she said: “Thank you, thank you so so much. I love my fans. Thank you. My fans in the UK, thank you.”

When accepting the award for “British male solo artist”, rapper Dizzee Rascal stated: “It’s about time as well.” Music group JLS were nominated for three awards and won two of them – “British breakthrough act” and “British single”. Group member Oritsé Williams stated in the acceptance speech: “We never ever thought this would happen, you’ve made our dreams come true.” Kasabian was given the award for “British group”. Lily Allen, who was wearing an orange wig during the award ceremony, received the award for “British female solo artist”. In her acceptance speech, she declared: “Oh my god. I only wore this orange wig ’cause I though it’d make it harder for them to find me, the cameramen, and catch my disappointed face.”

British group Florence and the Machine won the “Mastercard British album” award for the album Lungs. Florence Welch of the group accepted the award, stating: “Thanks so much for having me back. Cheers! […] There are so many people that help me make this album and so many people who supported it, people like you.” The award for “BRITs performance of 30 years” went to former group the Spice Girls for their performance of Wannabe/Who Do You Think You Are. The award for “International male solo artist” went to rapper Jay-Z.

Former British group Oasis were awarded with the honour of “BRITs album of 30 years”, for their album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?. Former group comrade Liam Gallagher came onto the stage to accept the award and told the viewers: “Listen kids. I wanna thank Bonehead, Quiggs, Alan White… the best fucking fans in the world. Live forever.” He then threw his microphone and the trophy into the crowd and walked off the stage. Presenter Peter Kay then came on and said about Gallagher: “What a knobhead.”

At one point during the programme, a pre-recorded video with Prince Harry of Wales in it was shown. In the video, Prince Harry said: “You’ll be pleased to know that I’m not gonna sing, but only because I don’t want to show up the next act. I hope you have a fantastic evening.”

The “Critic’s choice” award was given to British music artist Ellie Goulding. The “Outstanding contribution award” was won by British musician Robbie Williams, who performed a medley of thirteen of his songs at the end of the programme – Let Me Entertain You, Supreme, Millennium, Feel, Everything Changes (originally performed by Take That, the group that Williams was formerly a member of), Angels, No Regrets, Bodies, Come Undone, Morning Sun, Rock DJ and Rudebox.

Below is a complete list of the recipients of the awards on Tuesday night. Please note that the awards list is not in order of when they were given out.

Learn About Your Options Concerning A Heat Pump In Lewes, De

byAlma Abell

Many homeowners are looking for alternatives to the conventional heating and cooling equipment that is found in most homes. The reasons range from a desire for something different, to an increased interest in investing in equipment that is more ecologically sound. A Heat Pump In Lewes, DE may be the answer that you seek. This technology has vastly improved over the past few years, and is an option worth investigating when you are in need of a new climate control system for your home.

You may have heard the term heat pump, but may not know what it really is. Its function is as it sounds. Heat that is generated elsehwhere, like in the ground, is pumped into the system to provide it to an indoor environment. These systems are efficient and can deliver much more heat into a home compared to the cost to operate the system. These can work in reverse to remove heat from a home as well. It’s an all-in-one system, that doesn’t require a separate heater and cooling unit to be installed and separately maintained.

The reasons heat pumps are not used more widely is because of how they work. Climate plays a bug role in the suitability of installing a heat pump in a home. A Heat Pump In Lewes, DE is a good choice because its climate assures that the exchange is the most efficient. However, it does cost more to install a heat pump than it does for a conventional HVAC system. This is mainly due to the need for excavation and drilling so that the required pipes can be installed. This upfront cost is recouped fairly quickly due to the savings on the energy bill.

When looking for a company to install a heat pump, there are several things to consider. Be sure that the technicians are well-trained and experienced in the installation of heat pumps. This includes right down to manufacturer-based training. The contractors need to be licensed in the state, or you may not be protected if something goes wrong. Additional protection is assured by verifying that the company is also fully insured.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Horse flu spreads in Australia

Horse flu spreads in Australia

Monday, August 27, 2007

The number of horses confirmed to be infected with Equine Influenza in Australia has risen to 47, all in the state of New South Wales. So far none of those confirmed infected have been thoroughbred race horses.

The NSW government has confirmed infections at the federal government’s quarantine facility at Eastern Creek and Centennial Park in Sydney; at Cattai and Wilberforce in North-Western Sydney; and in Moonbi, Parkes, Berry and Wyong in regional NSW.

It is also feared that the outbreak may have spread to Warwick in Queensland where three horses from NSW showed flu-like symptoms during an equestrian event. Initial samples were tested in a laboratory in Brisbane revealing the three animals had been carrying the flu. Further testing will be conducted on samples from the horses in Victoria, although results are not expected until later this week. All 300 horses at the event have been quarantined.

There are also three suspected cases of the virus infecting thoroughbreds at Randwich racecourse in Sydney, if the horses test positive to the flu they will be the first thoroughbreds to be infected with the virus.

The Federal Agriculture Minister, Peter McGauran told ABC Radio this morning that while the source of the outbreak was not known, it is likely that the outbreak may have been caused by an equestrian event held in Maitland on the 18th and 19th of August.

“Everyone’s been assuming it was the Centennial Park horses that travelled and infected horses in different parts of regional NSW,” he said.

“It would appear at this stage that almost all, if not every horse affected has passed through a Maitland horse event on the weekend of the 18th and 19th, or come in contact with a Maitland horse.”

Agriculture Minister of NSW, Ian Macdonald told reporters “It’s early days yet, but a number of horses that attended an event at the property on that weekend are showing clinical signs of equine influenza”.

“The NSW Chief Vet, Bruce Christie, has advised me that we need to locate and examine every single horse that entered and left the property.”

At this stage it appears the Australia wide ban on horse movements which expires on Wednesday may have to be extended, at least in NSW and Queensland.

Further developments to this story are available. See:

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

Monday, September 7, 2015

The US economy added 173,000 jobs in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday. The unemployment rate fell from 5.3 to 5.1 percent, the lowest since April 2008.

Although August job gains were lower than most economists forecast, job growth numbers for June and July were revised upwards by a combined 44,000. Average job gains over the past three months stand at 221,000, compared to March-May’s 189,000 monthly average. Over the past twelve months, job growth has averaged 247,000 per month.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent, or 8 cents, marking the largest increase in earnings in seven months. Hourly earnings had risen by 6 cents in July. Wages have risen by 2.2 percent over the past year.

Job growth in August was primarily concentrated in the health care and social assistance, financial activities, and professional and business services sectors. Those three areas of the economy added a combined 108,000 jobs. Food service and drinking places employment increased by 26,000 over the month, and other economic sectors saw employment hold steady. Manufacturing, on the other hand, saw employment decline by 17,000 in August. A stronger dollar and worldwide economic weakness make US exports less desirable, leading to a flattening in manufacturing employment so far this year after steadily rising in the early years of the US economic recovery.

The solid overall job gains led analysts to slightly raise expectations for a decision by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month. Investors raised the likelihood of a September rate increase from 26 percent before the jobs report to 30 percent, and stocks dropped by over one percent on Friday. “The payrolls data is certainly good enough to allow for a Fed rate hike in September,” said Deutsche Bank’s head of currency strategy, Alan Ruskin. “The big question is still whether financial market volatility will scupper the plans.”

“This is the first time the market has looked at a Fed meeting and really has no idea what the Fed is going to do,” said Mark Kepner, a New Jersey equity trader with Themis Trading. “Right now you’re looking at the overall uncertainty and that’s what’s hanging on the market. I don’t think this number in and of itself changes how somebody’s going to vote.”
