Utah bill requiring divine design education withdrawn by Senator Chris Buttars

Monday, July 18, 2005

Utah Senator Chris Buttars has decided not to introduce a bill requiring the teaching of “divine design” in Utah schools, at least for this year. Buttars withdrew after State Board of Education director Patti Harrington assured him that Utah public school curriculum does not teach that man descended from apes.

Buttars had hoped his divine design proposal would escape the controversy of creationism or intelligent design. “The only people who will be upset about this are atheists,” he stated on June 6 when he announced his intention to run the bill.

Utah is home to the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints also known as the Mormon Church. On the surface it would seem Utah would be a likely scene of intense religious pressure in public schools over the teaching of evolution. But unlike states with a strong Christian conservative presence, Utah’s LDS leaders have avoided some of the more contentious separation state and church battles.

On the topic of divine design, official LDS church spokesmen have been largely silent at least in public. But with more than 90% of the legislature made up of members of the LDS faith, few in Utah would deny the influence of the church on public policy.

Groups on both sides of the issue are gearing up for what many consider an inevitable fight. The ACLU of Utah has posted a paper on divine design on its web site (http://www.acluutah.org). The Eagle Forum which wields significant policital power in Utah has expressed its support for Buttars proposed legislation.

Repairing The Foot And Ankle In Biomechanics Racine Wi

byAlma Abell

Wearing high-heeled shoes can be very damaging to one’s body after time. There are several reasons why a person may want to reconsider wearing shoes with heels and trade them for flat styles instead. Here are some of the troubles higher heels can cause to the body.

Over-wearing heels can lead to ailments in the Foot And Ankle in Biomechanics Racine WI. Often high-heels have a pointed toe area, causing the need to squeeze the toes into a small space. The toes will need to grasp onto the bottom of the shoe to keep the body upright when walking. This grasping and restrained area can cause a variety of problems to the feet including hammertoes, bunions, or corns. If heels are worn for an extensive time period, it becomes harder to walk as the feet become sore and ankles become weakened. Many people find they need assistance from a poditriast after wearing heels for several years.

People who wear heels may feel as if they have great posture due to the added height of the shoes. While they may appear to be walking upright with heels on, the posture will become altered when the shoes are removed. The body will need to be pushed forward when wearing heels to help center the body’s gravity. When the shoes are removed, the center of gravity changes. Someone may appear to have a gait as they walk without their heels on if they become accustomed to walking at a higher stance regularly.

Aches and pains can occur in the hamstrings, calf muscles and lower back due to high-heeled shoe wear. The person may need to see a doctor for pain medication as a result. They may also need to see a chiropractor to help relieve this pain. Opting for lower heels is the best way to avoid this scenario.

If someone needs to see a service dealing with Foot And Ankle in Biomechanics Racine WI, they can contact a physician in the area. To find a reputable doctor, you could look here. Make an appointment to have the feet or ankles evaluated. The doctor will then come up with a plan to reduce pain or reverse damage from wearing high heels.

End Of The Year Tips For Preparing For Your Cpa In Yorktown

byAlma Abell

When you know tax time is just around the corner, you might be tempted to put paperwork on the back burner and wait for the last minute. In preparing documents for your CPA in Yorktown, however, you’ll minimize stress and frustration after the new year.

1. Contribute to your retirement account.

If you are looking for ways to reduce your tax bill next year, contributing to your retirement account could offer the perfect solution. You’re essentially paying yourself, which means you will still reap the benefits of that capital at some point down the line. Plus, you’ll relieve some of the stress when it comes to setting and attaining retirement goals.

2. Write a check to your favorite charity.

Another way to reduce the amount owed to Uncle Sam is to support one of your favorite charities. This tax-deductible donation will provide you not only with a lowered tax bill, but also the personal satisfaction of contributing to a good cause. Just make sure you ask in advance whether the donation is subject to tax deductions. For example, campaign donations given to a favored political candidate usually do not.

3. Spend the money in your FSA.

Don’t waste the money you have contributed toward your flexible spending account. While that money is not taxed before it is withdrawn from your paycheck, you can’t roll it over into the next year. Stop avoiding your dental work or grab a new pair of eyeglasses, for example, to avoid wasting (and losing) the money before year’s end.

4. Gather all your receipts.

Take the time to gather all your receipts for the year before it comes to an end. Create a file in your home office, for example, into which all receipts are placed, then itemize them according to their purpose and amounts. Getting this out of the way before you visit your CPA in Yorktown will make the process run much more smoothly.

If you follow the above tips, working with a CPA will not cause unnecessary stress after the new year begins. Assembling paperwork and taking advantage of all tax opportunities will allow you to enjoy the holidays and start next year fresh. Once you have finished your preparations, contact Carmines Robbins and Company PLC to discuss your tax needs.

Abby Cadabby debuts at Sesame Place today as a walkaround character

Saturday, May 5, 2007

The Sesame Place theme park in Langhorne, Pennsylvania opened for its 2007 season this morning, adding Abby Cadabby to its all-star lineup of characters that children can meet.

Described as a “sweet, inquisitive enthusiastic three-year-old fairy-in-training” who loves making new friends, the character stars in a musical show called Abby Cadabby’s Treasure Hunt. Featuring all of the stars of Sesame Street, the production joins Elmo’s World Live: Fishes.

Abby was not the first recurring female character to be introduced to Sesame Street since 1993, as press materials for season 37 of Sesame Street proclaimed; Phoebe and Googel from the short-lived Monster’s Clubhouse segment both hold that title. She is however the first new female character since 1993 to show any lasting power. Her performer, Leslie Carrara, says Abby will appear in “almost every episode next season”.

The Langhorne, Pennsylvania attraction was opened in 1980, sparking robust commercial development in the town. While similar parks have opened in Irving, Texas, Tokyo, Japan, Monterrey, Mexico and São Paulo, Brazil, none of them managed to strike the hearts and minds of tourists.

Roller coaster Super Grover’s Vapor Trail, the Sky Splash water ride, and the “Rock Around the Block” musical parade all return for the 2007 season, as do other rides, shows, and physical play activities.

The park is open Friday through Sunday until 25 May, when the park begins opening daily. After Labor Day, Sesame Place is open weekends only until 27 October 2007.

Florida man charged with stealing Wi-Fi

Update since publication

This article mentions that Wi-Fi stands for “Wireless Fidelity”, although this is disputed.

Thursday, July 7, 2005

A Florida man is being charged with 3rd degree felony for logging into a private Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) Internet access point without permission. Benjamin Smith III, 41, is set for a pre-trial hearing this month in the first case of its kind in the United States.

This kind of activity occurs frequently, but often goes undetected by the owners of these wireless access points (WAPs). Unauthorized users range from casual Web browsers, to users sending e-mails, to users involved in pornography or even illegal endeavours.

According to Richard Dinon, owner of the WAP Smith allegedly broke into, Smith was using a laptop in an automobile while parked outside Dinon’s residence.

There are many steps an owner of one of these access points can take to secure them from outside users. Dinon reportedly knew how to take these steps, but had not bothered because his “neighbors are older.”

Elderly man in Scotland dies after contracting H1N1 swine flu virus

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

An elderly man in Scotland has died after contacting the H1N1 virus, or swine flu. The Scottish Government made the confirmation of the information on Monday.

The victim is said to have been suffering from underlying health problems. He came from the NHS Fife area. With the death of this victim, the number of deaths that have occurred in Scotland from the virus has now reached 30.

Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish Health Secretary, made a statement about the incident, and encouraged eligible persons to receive antiviral vaccines. “My deepest sympathy goes to the patient’s loved ones at this sad time,” she said.

“H1N1 can be devastating in a small number of cases but fortunately the vast majority of people only suffer fairly mild symptoms and make a full recovery. However, we must all remain vigilant and I would underline the importance of maintaining hygiene standards and urgently seeking medical advice if you believe you are at greater risk of influenza complications.”

Correction — August 24, 2015 These briefs incorrectly describe BP as ‘British Petroleum’. In fact, such a company has not existed for many years as BP dropped this name when becoming a multinational company. The initials no longer stand for anything.
